Re: McCain A-4E

Man, I saw a bunch of archival video footage of his plane/squadron in a military channel show a few weeks ago... darned if I recall what it was though. It was all about the A-4, I'll see if I can recall/find out more, but maybe some of the fellas here can fill in my foggy memory. He was interviewed along with several other a-4 pilots and the story focused on the plane's service record in Vietnam...

Was it called "Hugging The Deck"

Re: McCain A-4E

The aircraft that's shown in the painting was lost on July 29, 1967 when U.S.S. Forrestall caught fire.

I'd even settle for this one from the Forrestal but even other pictures, decals or plastic models are impossible to find. I'd prefer the plane from the Oriskany when he flew with the Saints but beggars can't be choosers.
I think his plane would be an excellent candidate for a Hobby Master model. I need to find these pictures before I can even think of approaching them to do it.

Re: McCain A-4E

There are a lot of pictures of him and only 1 maybe 2 B&W pictures of his plane but it is covered up so much with the net it really isn't much good to me. I'd kill for a couple of color shots and I'm with Skunky I would prefer the plane he was shot down in but at this time I'd settle for either. Even pictures of some plastic models of the plane I'm looking for colors and markings, as much as I can get.

McCain was shot down in VA-163's CAG bird (AH300, BuNo 149959), and that B&W barricade photo is probably the best shot available at the time of the shootdown. But the squadron markings appear to have been fairly consistent across the unit in 1967, and there are a number of color images of VA-163 A-4s from the period.

Might also try the Tailhook Photo Service (www.tailhook.org), which has odd things in their archives.

Actually I believe it is a "C", what I was after was the correct paint scheme to put on an "E".
I have a copy of the PC flight simulator listed in another post for 305AH of VA-163 same time period and it shows in black 305AH on the top right wing. I can't tell if the 300AH pictures have the same thing because all of the pictures are mostly concentrated on the left side. Does anyone know if 300AH is on top of the right wing?
I attached the picture of 305AH so you could see what I mean.

I found the answer to this question, yes there was a 300AH on top of the right hand wing.

Re: McCain A-4E

Dear Guys,

the " Scottish Stuff " are tartan bands in a tartan which it appears McCain may not be entitled to wear.

There are problems with 'McCain' being a real Scottish name with a real Scottish tartan. It is more likely that the name 'McCain' originates in Co Derry in Ireland.

You need to have a real Scottish Clan name ( or have a name that is a Sept of the Clan ) in order to wear the tartan.

This is the tartan claimed by McCain on a Crest and motto:

It is doubtful if this is a real or recognised tartan!

Try painting that, you modellers or convertors!

THOSE WHO USE A TARTAN WHICH IS NOT REAL OR WHO USE ONE WHICH YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO WEAR ARE SUBJECT TO IMMEDIATE HAUNTING BY THE GHOST OF BANQUO AND MAY, UPON CAPTURE, BE FED TO THE LOCH NESS MONSTER!
