Size of new display case?

For you folks out there with the kick a$$ wood and glass display cases, any helpful tips for someone who's having one built??

I plan to have a case built that I can mount to the wall, it'll have glass doors, not sure about glass shelves or wood shelves.

Wondering how wide I should have the shelves made?? I'd like to display my Lancs (finally) and some 1:32 scale aircraft. I'm going to keep the Ikea Detolfs for the 1:72 fighters and such.

Any ideas would be appreciated. My biggest concern is having the case mounted too high and not being able to see what's on the top shelves.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays.

Gord

Re: Size of new display case?

Hey Gord,
I have a Oak wood one bulit for me a few years ago and made the mistake of not using a front sliding glass door.
It's about 79"tall 34"wide and about 18" deep with glass shelves of about 16.6 deep.
You can see what it looks like by going to the Collections area of the forum.
This was made for my Nascar 1/24 cars that i had and so i put them up and tried the 1/72nd planes and it worked really well for me.

Re: Size of new display case?

I have a wood and glass display where I added shelves, and where I have the bombers displayed on their stands the distance between the two shelves is only 8 3/4", the rest of them are only 5 3/4". I actually have a B 17 and B 24 displayed on their wheels in a shelf 5 3/4" (I put them in there before putting the shelf on top, might not be able to get them out without removing the shelf above them either). I like to get the most display area for my space as possible, as space is at a premium, unlike the Admin and his "apparent" diecast room adition that he is "talking" about having added!

Also, I prefer glass shelves as one can see the airplanes better.

I agree, glass shelves are a must. I had my new shelves built 18" deep, and so far thats been good enough. I haven't really got my collection back up though so I can't say for sure.

Re: Size of new display case?

Thank you for your input, I'm finalizing my plans for the new cabinet to ship off to the builder. Just finished painting the rec room and bar area, hope to have the case up in the next few months. 'Til then, I'll have to get the Detolf restocked with the new shelves in place.

Re: Size of new display case?

The more the merrier guys. Wifey said it was going to be "my" area, to do with as I pleased. My Bf109 "Count" limited edition print is going back up on the wall, Fallschirmjager as well, and hopefully a few new pieces in the near future......Robert Bailey has really caught my eye.

We just tonight finished touching up the paint after removing the tape, (will never put tape up again) and can now start decorating and such. I have to clean the Detolf's, add the extra shelves I had planned for them, and start making my wine again. Gee, wish I didn't have to work....oh wait, that's how I paid for all this crap in the first place.

The new wall cabinet will be the coup de grace for the bar area, can't wait to have it built and installed. It'll just mean more large scale planes .

Anyhoo, I will definitely post some pics when we get the downstairs back up and running again. Super Bowl party is at mine this year, should look good on the new 58" Panasonic Viera plasma as well. (Worked a lot of overtime this year in case you were wondering). The taxpayers of Ontario were served well, I'm sure.

Happy New Year guys, thanks for the posts. Can't wait to show you the new Casa da Schrage in '07.
