Re: Scene in Battle of Britain

Yep, that CASA residing at Duxford (awaiting some form of restoration) was once a movie star.
Also seen at Legends this year, a Buchon, another movie star from the same film.

Tom Cruise , eat your heart out.............you only have a run of the mill P51.

Looks almost like a P-40 Warhawk to me.

Re: Scene in Battle of Britain

.

Since we are on the subject of WW2 planes in movies, I was watching "A Bridge Too Far" last week. When the tanks begin to roll up the road toward Germany and the artillery starts laying down fire, several "British" planes come zooming overhead to attack the German emplacements. I can't recognize what planes these are. Does anybody know?

Yeah, (Sadly) They're Harvards, which are supposed to be replicating/portraying Hawker Typhoons.

Sadly, as there is only ONE intact Hawker Typhoon in existence anywhere in the world (& it's grounded, at the R.A.F.M. in Hendon N.W. London).....
hence why they used Harvards during the 1977 filming.

Taking the liberty of answering B.4 Datacroft gets home (I guess ?!! )

It's a Hispano Buchon (Spanish licence built 109) painted up to look like the real Mc Coy (which it obviously ain't).

Same type as used in the 'Battle of Britain' movie (made in the late '60's).

The front end doesn't look right because the Buchons (being postwar), were fitted with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine, which was readily available -
Unlike the Daimler-Benz D.B. 605's (which were fitted to later German 109's)
which obviously, at the end of the war, ceased to be manufactured, along with their associated spare parts. (hope that helps).

Re: Scene in Battle of Britain

For me the best scene of the whole movie (which I have seen many many times) is part of the opening sequence when the RAF are abandoning their airstrip. Some dude is about to set fire to a disabled AC when a bunch of 109s come in low on a strafing run. I watched that part hundreds of time.
