Irwin Dead

This has absolutely nothing to do with diecast but I find this to be quite sad, although can't say as that I'm too terribly surprised.

"Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed while he was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef Monday. Apparently he died after receiving a stingray barb to the heart.

I have often been absolutely amazed at the dangerous situations he had put himself in with wildlife and feared that one day it would catch up with him. Unfortunately that day has come.

I thought he was a bit on the crazy side, but truly enjoyed his infectious personality and his wide-eyed wonder of nature....

I wish I could tell you it was one of my "Tales of Interest", JP, but it appears to be sad but true...

Re: Irwin Dead

Horribly sad, indeed. The article I read said fatalities from rays are extremely rare so it is doubly surprising. His shows were great to watch with my boys (especially his special with the Wiggles - the only thing that made that one tolerable). My boys learned a lot about being careful with wildlife and how to be enthusiastic about the things you love. Almost everytime they saw a snake they would say, "Look but don't touch, stay away Daddy."

Thoughts and prayers to his family - especially his son and daughter.

Re: Irwin Dead

I really liked him but in the back of my mind always felt he took too many chances. I thought it would be death by croc actually. I am very very shocked and feel more sad for his surviving family especially his wife and kid(s). I am guessing he attempted to pick one up like we did on our cruise to Grand Caymen. If you pick a large one up putting one wing over each arm you can make them spit water at what ever you are aiming for and it makes a nice picture. Of course those giant rays are quite tame and are hand fed daily although still in their natural environment. He probably did this with a large one that was not happy and it stuck it's spine up for defense. Very very sad indeed.

Re: Irwin Dead

Yeah, I was shocked, too. As schmaltzy as this sounds, it was akin to losing a personal friend.

Still, I have to agree with Skunky: Steve put himself into some pretty, uh ... unhealthy ... situations; and I, too, felt that if he didn’t pull up a bit, some animal or situation would punch his ticket.

Truly, I'm deeply saddened at his loss. My deepest condolences to his wife and children – and the people of Australia.
