I believe it was, but I'm not for certain on it. I'd have to research it.

Re: P-51 from 75FS/23FG

Yes, Tex Hill did Command the first 75th FS after returning to China, thus he is known as "Shark 1" within the squadron lineage. Another good friend, Bubba Dixon, was the 43rd C.O. of the 75th FS and is known as "Shark 43" and he flew A-10 Warthogs in Desert Storm. We all had dinner last weekend.

Tex signing the other wing at a party at the Dixons

Also partying with us was Mazie Hill, Karen Kollenburg (The daughter of Lt. Richard Joyce, plane #10 Doolittle raid) and Dick Cole (Doolittle's Co-pilot)

Re: P-51 from 75FS/23FG

Very cool. It is one thing to have the chance to meet some of these people, but it is something else to have the chance to sit, relax, and party with these people. I had the chance to have that experience this summer during a very special party at Oshkosh.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: P-51 from 75FS/23FG

I would love to have a P-51 in his markings. But I don't really have the skills or knowledge to do the work.

I'd really like to help you get a model in his markings someway, any volunteers! Do you know what colors were used on the tail and what year and month that pic was taken? The decals for the nose art can be custom made. Again, thanks for posting that picture, the 75th FS in WWII is one of my favorites. I'm off to research that paint scheme.

Re: P-51 from 75FS/23FG

The tail, stripe in front of the tail, noseart, and area on top of the engine were black. The rest of the aircraft was factory natural finish silver. I can't tell what colors the insignia were. It appears to be a faded silver, but I can't tell for certain.

He did tell me that he flew P-40s, P-51Bs, -Cs, and -Ds during the war and even a P-47 stateside in the post-war. As well as all the trainer aircraft during WWII. I never did confirm if he ever flew P-38s, even though he did have pictures of them while they were at his base.

Re: P-51 from 75FS/23FG

I had the chance to go to an event hosted by Gen Yeager this past year at Air Venture. While there you couldn't help but notice the others in attendance such as Dennis Quaid, Harrison Ford, Bob Hoover, Dick and Burt Rutan, John Travolta, Tex Hill, Dale Snodgrass, and a bnch of others. It was areally cool evening that left you feeling like part of the group. I think that would be a great thread to have on here.

Which Topic? We could talk about our relatives, nieghbors, or someone we met at the grocery store, they all have a story to tell. Many of our veterans never spoke about their involvment before, but are willing to share now!
