Re: Dogfights on the History Channel

After watching lastnight's episode, I think they should do a few more of the Air War in Vietnam episodes, for instance that of Capt. Steven Ritchie's ACE making victories (I think he's still alive?) and MOH winner Lt.Col. Leo Thorsness' F-105 shooting down a Mig 17 (Rondevous with a Rattlesnake)

That one is coming up -

HELL OVER HANOI - December 1 @10PM/9C
The skies over Vietnam. They fight in a supersonic world, where split second decisions determine if they live - or die. American F4 Phantom pilots Fred Olmsted and Dan Cherry take on the famed MiG-21 - the most feared threat in the sky. And one American, Steve Ritchie, becomes a dog fighting legend as an Air Force Ace. You're in the cockpit with some of the fiercest dogfighting ever seen in Vietnam!

Re: Dogfights on the History Channel

Don't forget to check for your local times. That goes for you too, Skunky

GUADALCANAL
August 1942... the Solomon Islands. Heroic, die-hard American pilots of the tiny Cactus Air Force match skills and instincts against top Japanese aces as they battle in the skies above Guadalcanal. Legendary Marine Capt. John Smith and Medal of Honor recipients Jeff De Blanc and Jim Swett pit their tough 4F4 Wildcats against the relentless Japanese Zeros. At stake--the fate of the Pacific War.

Re: Dogfights on the History Channel

I'm putting 3 episodes on each disc and then, if I have time I delete the commercials. Should be a good one tonight. I thought the P-40/ AVG episode was a little lacking in the dogfight department actually. Nice documentary though.

Re: The last gunfighter

I liked this episode the best so far, taught me a lot about the Crusader and showed there were aircraft other than the Phantom in Vietnam

Incredible stories, awesome CGI -- spectacular aircraft and pilots.

Bring on the Crusader in 1:72 Hobby Master!

Have to agree with you Pappy, the Sader was the best US dogfighters of the Vietnam conflict. For more in depth info in book form, check out On Yankee Station, which Barrett Tillman wrote with Commander John Nichols (mig killer). Or Paul Gillcrist's Crusader. Tillman and Gillcrist were both featured on the program. Yankee Station tells of the frustrations of the Vietnam air campaign, and has great info on how the Crusader community "kept the faith" and continued dogfighting while the rest of the USN and USAF community believed that Missiles would be the end all of aerial combat.

I'd certainly buy an F-8 in 1/72 diecast if one came out.

Missiles, heck, from what I've seen the damn things hardly ever worked.

What was the kill ration, like .013 or something they said?

Screw that, give me a cannon.

Anyone have a list of all the episodes?

Mig Alley
Air Ambush
Guadacanal
Zero Killers
The Last Gunfighter
Hell Over Hanoi
The Flying Tigers

I think that's it... other than the two hour original show.

Re: Dogfights on the History Channel

History Channel seems to be doing strange things to the schedule of the program. Here are the listings for the next two NEW episodes. Check out history.com for more details...

Dogfights : 08 - Death of the Japanese Navy Airs on Friday December 29 10:00 PM

In one of the most amazing yet lopsided naval battles in history, a mighty Japanese fleet led by the Yamato, the biggest battleship in the world, versus Taffy 3, a small U.S. task unit of tin can destroyers and baby flat-tops. The U.S. fleet is made up of ships too weak to fight and too slow to run. David battles Goliath in a fight for survival, with the lives of thousands of American soldiers in the balance. We will recreate this famous battle using state of the art computer graphics. Viewers will feel like they're in the battle, facing the enemy.

Dogfights : 12 - Long Odds Airs on Friday January 12 10:00 PM

Bomber's vs. Fighters face off in three of the most intense dogfights in history! Courageous bomber pilots from World War II and Vietnam challenge deadly foes against incredible odds. Using state of the art computer animation, you're in the cockpit with legendary World War II Navy ace Swede Vejtasa's SBD dive bomber as he fights off eight lethal Japanese Zeroes. World War II Medal of Honor winner Jay Zeamer and his crew pit their slow B-17 bomber against 17 Japanese fighters in a battle for survival. Next, soar with Air Force Lt. Col. Leo Thorsness as his F-105 Thunderchief takes on a flight of skilled MiG-17'sin the skies over Vietnam.
