Re: Who Is Your All Time Favorite Top American WWII Ace

TOO many choices!!!!!! TOO many individual stories I don't know.

I'm not sure the "number" of official confirmed kills is a big factor in my opinion. Also, my favorites are based on the history I know vs. all the stories/heroics that I an unaware of.

Four of my favorites that are not on the list (not necessarily in order).

Lee "Buddy" Archer (Was he an ace? Officially "no." But the facts/circumstances of his service would seem to indicate otherwise.) While shooting down German planes, always kept to the mission - protecting the bombers. What's a better "ace" than that??? (Also, shared sinking of a German destroyer escort...with machine gun fire????? - I thought he was on that mission, but I could be wrong here.) What's that worth? Seems like he is/was very humble regarding his accomplishments as well. Battling the Axis as well as the racism of the time - Archer truly fought a war on two personal fronts that none of the pilots in the poll faced. (Not taking anything away from them, just highlighting what Archer dealt with. )

Alex Vraciu

Rex Barber - shot down Yamamoto's plane, and then immediately had the credit "stolen" from him by another pilot who had future political ambitions. Sucked to be Rex at the time.

Ira Kepford

Just about ANY pilot with the AVG (but does the "mercenary"/profit motivation drop some of them from the top of my "favorites?" I 'm not sure.)

Skunky, you seem to have awarded yourself the prize of a dapper new look - is that a helmet you're wearing?

The booties seem to match the helmet well ... . Good luck with your search for the metallic one ... to boldly go where no Skunk has gone before ...
