Re: New movie: Rescue Dawn

One to miss I think. And speaking of one to miss, the new Rambo movie. Saw the trailer the other day; ugh!! mindless violence and killing, IMHO. I like a well made action/war movie ie Untouchables, Saving Private Ryan, Heat, Departed, Man On Fire etc.

One to miss? Can you elaborate on that, please? I'm curious....

Re: New movie: Rescue Dawn

I based my opinion on the 1 .06 you tube link that was posted . IMHO it looked like that standard Hollywood inaccurate fare that is dished out like Pearl Harbour etc. On seeing the extended trailers posted by Starman I must REVISE my opinion and state that this is one NOT TO MISS.
My opinion on seeing the trailer of the new Rambo movie remains unchanged.

Re: New movie: Rescue Dawn

My local paper gave it an outstanding review (OK it is not the NY Times!)

Re: New movie: Rescue Dawn

Hey folks,
This got a limited release about 6 weeks ago and got a slightly wider release about 2 weeks ago. It's still only playing on about 450 screens around the U.S.

I saw this a couple of weeks ago and its excellent. Based on the true story of the Dieter Dengler, who was a POW very early in Laos before we admitted we were fighting there. The flying scenes are few, but the story is really about the person, not the planes. The last 80% of the film is Dengler in the camp and the escape, which is absolutely accurate as far as my (limited) research has been able to find out.

Werner Herzog (The director) made a documentary about Dieter Dengler a few years ago. Dengler's story is one that Herzog was very close to this is one of his best films.

Anything for a weird life.

Uh-oh...I smell a diecast project here. Hopefully, we'll see one from Gemini Aces.

This Douglas Skyraider '504' is painted to represent the A-1H flown by Lt Dieter Dengler of the VA-145 "Swordsmen" on the USS Ranger during 1966. He was the only US. serviceman to successfully escape and fight his way back to freedom in this conflict.

Re: New movie: Rescue Dawn

flyXwire,
Hey there.

That was actually what I was thinking going into the film. However, his flying career in the Skyraider did not last very long, so it might be kind of a dubious project. None the less, I'll be in line for one should Gemini decide to make one.

Re: New movie: Rescue Dawn

The movie so far has garnered mixed reviews, but I'll probably see it anyway due to the subject matter. It will be tough to top the book though. The trailer below already has an inaccuracy that bugs me- the Hueys shown, a UH-1N twin turbine (I believe), did not operate in 1966. I could be mistaken though; someone with more knowledge of the types can fill in.
