Re: Effects of 'Flags of Our Fathers' on the Diecast Market

I agree with every word you said there Mustangdriver, in the area I live, the Duke of Wellingtons regiment was based. Many in the Regiment were captured by the Japs at Singapore. I heard first hand what those chaps suffered at the hands of these evil "£$%^&&. The hatred for the Japanese is still to this day very strong within the local community. It was that generation that brought me up and trained me in my first job. I used to listen to them talking about their exploits during the war. They never spoke much about the fighting but laughed and joked all the time about what they got up too on leave and boy o boy was some of it risque to say the least. Mostly the chaps I knew served in the western desert and all had a grudging resepct for the German soldiers of the Afrika Corp.I grew up hearing of what seemed to me to be really exciting places like Sidi Barrani and Merza Matruh. Hearing about houses of ill repute in Cairo and Alex. Trading bags of tea with the Arabs for trinkets to send back home. But back to the point, The behavior of the Japanese cannot ever be excused and has as the great man said, gone down in the pages of infamy forever. Some of the history buffs on the Hanger may be able to help here, I read an excellent book by the Japanese officer in charge of Okinawa. He describes in detail the other side of the invasion of the island. It is a good book but at the same time it shows what a sick society had been created in Japan by the military. It s a warning to us all. .................................................. .................................................

Okay fellas, enough's enough.
The point of thread is whether or not Flags of Our Fathers will have an effect on the diecast industry, not whether or not actions taken by forces during WWII were reprehensible or not. Please keep it on topic.

I can't see how it would, unless some aircraft was featured in it.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

Re: Effects of 'Flags of Our Fathers' on the Diecast Market

I just returned from seeing it with the wife. It left me feeling very proud and also saddened. We lost 6,000 marines and sailors. The war scenes are very much like Saving Private Ryan bloody, gritty, and graphic. They are not overdone and they are realistic. They are what all the books and documentaries describe them as being like. Some really nice flying scenes and sceneds from inside the cockpit of Corsairs that are on bombing and strafing runs. The acting is really good. I think Clint did a fantastic job of portraying the anguish of combat and the neccessity of good PR to fund the war. There are also alot of real photos of the combat from the father of the movies writer who was actually a main character and fought in the battle. I think the whole story should be told. Soldiers from both sides had to fight regardless of religion or social staus or political affiliation. My father fought the Germans. They wounded him twice in combat. As an officer he lost many good men under his command but he respected the Germans as soldiers. War is a series of atrocities. This movie may spark some interest in Japanese and US Navy models. Figures will also be popular if they do some in 1/72 to go with tanks and artillery. Great movie i highly recommend it. It's a side of the war few really ponder I am sure.

Re: Effects of 'Flags of Our Fathers' on the Diecast Market

Well mates i just got back watching this outstanding movie with my father who is also WWII vet and it's a very powerfull movie.
All i will tell you mates is that it is worth every penny to go see this movie.
"Flyboys" last month and now "Flags of Our Fathers" this month...Wow both of these movie rock.
If you have the time go see this movie you be glad you did.
For me i had to drive to Sacramento to watch it at the Regal Natomas Marketplace 16 theater.
This movie is not in every city like most movies are....It was worth the drive since we were in Sacramento anyway.

So are you from Sacramento? If you are we are probably neighbors. I saw FooF at the Regal El Dorado Hills theater just off Hwy 50 NE of Sacto.
Btw, I enjoyed the movie, even if it's just a glimpse of the F4U Corsairs 'fly-bys' in the background.
