Re: Churchill Quote

This is my fav quote:

Lady Astor: "Winston, if I were your wife I'd put poison in your coffee."
Winston: "Nancy, if I were your husband I'd drink it."

As far as i recall that quote is a myth, pretty sure it was never said.

Re: Churchill Quote

Grizzly Adams,
Always remember, "When given a choice between printing a myth and the truth, always print the myth. It makes for a better story" (Tony Wilson said this. Not Winston Churchill. Still, it is one of my favorite quotes.)

Re: Churchill Quote

I wouldnt mind betting that if Churchill had had more time he would have collected diecast. He was somewhere between a genius and a small boy. Remember he stood by the Rhine and widdled in it with a great big smile on his face . Only he would think like that. Oh yes I remember also his quote about the difference between sex and a good cigar but I dare not post that one.

Re: Churchill Quote

From The Churchill Centre web page:

"I'd drink it [poison]"
Lady Astor: "Winston, if I were your wife I'd put poison in your coffee."
Winston: "Nancy, if I were your husband I'd drink it."

This exchange is sometimes attributed to Winston's good friend F.E. Smith, but in Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan's The Glitter and the Gold she writes that the exchange occurred at Blenheim when her son was host. See also the American edition of Martin Gilbert's In Search of Churchill (not in the British edition). In Nancy: The Life of Lady Astor, Christopher Sykes confirms Consuelo Balsan's account. "It sounds like an invention but is well authenticated. [Churchill] and the Astors were staying with Churchill's cousin, the Duke of Marlborough, at Blenheim Palace. Nancy and Churchill argued ferociously throughout the weekend."

Actually, he did, toy cannons and cavalry along with a legendary collection of Toy Soldiers. As a boy, Churchill would recreate legendary battles right down to their formations and positions with his hundreds (perhaps over a thousand) toy soldiers and cannon.

I wonder if his collection is retained in a museum today? I hope it is. Since they were all from the most coveted Toy Soldier manufacturers of the day, I imagine each piece is worth a pretty penny today.

I love Churchill.

Winston Churchill's collecting began as early as age 7, noted in a letter he wrote to his father talking about his toy soldiers, flags and castles. His love of the military led him to Sandhurst and a career in the military long before he became prime minister. Many of the regiments he served in are now available in toy soldier collections. He was particularly interested in the Napoleonic era reflected in the collection he amassed of over 1500 soldiers on display in the home of his birth, Blenheim Palace. Both a student of history and a writer of it, Winston Churchill saw his toy soldiers as the next best thing to being there.

Cgurchill wasn't the only one to add to the Rhine River. There are many more to include Patton.
