Re: NEW 1:72 GeminiACES May Release

This post by Leviathan over on the UK die-cast forum just sold me.

-------------------------------

"Guy's,

The top surface of this mustang is RLM 74 Graugrun, with RLM 04 yellow underneath. The model used on the Gemini site is (as is often the case with die-cast manufacturers) a pre-production model and the wrong colour was applied to this model.

It has now been changed to the darker RLM 74 and looks stunning!

We also have to bear in mind the difficulties of accurate colour representation on computer screens. It is hard enough to get digital cameras to record colour correctly, but add to that the calibration of individual computer monitors and you have a real issue! I would never be happy verifying the colours of a pre-production model via a picture on a computer.

Take it from me, this model is a little stunner!"

Regards
Leviathan

Re: NEW 1:72 GeminiACES May Release

That RLM 74 color is still a dark gray ...No ?
I can't find any picture in my books or on-line of this color on a Mustang.
Green then it went to Bare metal is all i can find on it..
But i'm still getting the little bird.

Here is a chart in case people don't know what a RLM color codes are.

Re: NEW 1:72 GeminiACES May Release

RLM 74 Graugrun is by its very name, a form of green. Though admittedly, it's very grey and only slightly greenish (like many German colors that call themselves green/blue/purple).

And of course, RLM 74 is also called Dunkelgrau, which is simply "dark grey". Because--there's 2 different versions of RLM 74. V.1 and V.2, or A and B, depending what you go by. RLM colors are just evil and impossible to match, and know which version you're dealing with. One RLM74 is much darker and less "grey" than the other. Good luck knowing what's "right".

The colors you see on your screen are rarely going to be the actual colors. The screen pixels are lights, whereas the actual models are reflected light, and even the character of the reflected light (for instance, light bulb or flash) will change the apparent color of the model; different camera makes, and even different cameras within makes, take pictures with slight differences in color; a camera's white balance settings will change the colors recorded; the lens used will change the contrast in the picture, which effects colors near the shadows; exposure settings change the quality of colors; the color of the picture background will intensify some colors, while muting others; even the color chart shown earlier in this thread doesn't show the precise paint colors (though still useful as a comparison between major color groups such as grey-greens and greys and lights and darks); and printed color charts in magazines or brochures are almost always wrong -- the only time those colors will be correct is if they are printed directly on special (usually expensive) paper.

Usually, I just trust the experts, though I'm sure they make their share of mistakes. I especially trust the GA folks, because the colors on their excellent 1/400 models are most excellent -- they may or may not be accurate (how to tell?), but at least the colors are convincing.

And of all the paint schemes available, a captured one was chosen. I'm disappointed...but biased, too.

They've put out, what, 8 different P-51B schemes, and will no doubt use the mold to create dozens more, so why not a limited run of captured? Personally, I always wanted one of these (they are always being illustrated in mags, books, and overviews), but never thought anyone would have the guts to do it! It will be a great addition to the six '51s I already have...

Sorry, I didn't read well enough to see that it is a limited run. My apologies for my comment.

But I just keep hoping for a MTO and...CBI P-51B.

Re: NEW 1:72 GeminiACES May Release

Pete's Collectibles has them for $41.99. I'm waiting to see if I can find them for cheaper.

At that price - not for me - I have enough GA stangs

Ooops!

You can get it cheaper -- keeping in mind shipping differences, of course!
