Wires

What were the wire type things that hung from the aerial across to the tail on the early 40's warbirds? And when did they stop using them? Have only seen these types on certain Corgi 1:32 models but wonder if Gemini would fit them on early Spitfires if thats how they appeared???

Aslo would mirrors be hard to accomodate in 1:72 scale? There does'nt have to be a real mirror in (imagine how tiny that would be!), maybe just a certain paint to give the effect of a mirror.

Anyone know what year the USAAF Aces Spitfire is supposed to be from?

Cheers!

The wires are the antenna for the wireless sets I believe. I don't think they stopped using them, probably some advancement in the technology was discovered to make them less conspicuous, and they were placed somewhere they wouldn't be damaged so easily. It's the same as the antennas on cars, they used to have the large aerial sticking out somewhere, but newer cars you can't see the aerial at all.

You're right, the Corgi 1:32 Hurricanes have them, so do some of the GMP models at 1:35 scale, but from what I've heard/seen the string/wire used looks unconvincing for the most part, and often is just a pain to deal with. It might be correct for the early Spitfires to have them, but at 1:72 scale it would more than likely not work out to well for Gemini to try it. They seem to be good about engineering stuff though, so who knows?

You might get a tiny bump on the casting where the mirror would be, but I highly doubt that a convincing mirror effect could be achieved at such a small scale. The mirror on a 1/72 scale warbird would indeed be tiny, probably around 1/20 of an inch or so. That's just an estimate.

1943, according to the folks at the Flying Mule.

Well, duh, wouldn't that be a contradiction in terms?
