Thanks for the pics, Mark. Excellent work, as usual. And it looks like my Spitfire collection will keep growing...

Re: GAUSA1004 USAAF Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX

Sorry Old Boy, the Spitfire just doesn't spin my wheels. For me the P-51B with malcom hood is the most beautiful fighter. Most durable, the P-47 Thunderbolt (razorbacks being the best looking). Most casualty producing, Hellcat! And then the Corsair, she is that ugly only mothers can love.
But for a British bird, the Spitfire is a cutie. There happy now? Or is it the mosquito?
- Shawn

HMMmmm, Cutie eh? OK lets look at this again. The Spitifre has beautifull curved and gracefull lines Whereas the Mustang is straight and angular. The Spitfire makes a noise like the purr of a Tiger whereas the Mustang snarls like a tomcat out on the tiles.

Having said all the above I love Mustangs. I also have to admit the Stang could go all the way to Berlin whereas the Spit only ever made it to Paris. (aerodynamics is a fascinating subject on its own, coefficent of drag etc amazing stuff).

The P47 is certainly a big tough lady probably what a Yorkshire girl would be like if you turned her into an aeroplane.

The Hellcat is again an angular type of bird, and a tough looking lady.

The Corsair sure is ugly but It has a charm all of its own. Brute strength and power, I love it.

I suppose its how we each perceive beauty, I like the curves and flowing lines on my planes eg Spitfire.

As to the Mossie well just look at the streamlined and sexy body on that lovely lady.

AH what the heck, I just love warbirds, they are all equal in my book ,(well some are more equal than others).

I thought that I had enough Spits to keep me happy but just like other members I think this offering looks the best yet.
this is certainly an expensive hobby.

God Bless America.

Question Re: GAUSA1004 USAAF Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX

Is it just me (and my old tired eyes) or Gemini mounted the propeller the wrong way? Although the prop markings are where they should be it looks to me that the shape of the blades has the leading edge on the wrong side...

I'll take the snarl over the purr in many situations. Some of which we cannot discuss here. What can I say !!

I think it is not my eyes...Look at this picture where I compare the real thing with my Gemini Spit Mk. IXe.

Two things are evident. The prop of the model is facing the wrong way (the leading edge is the more straight border of the prop) and the prop diameter is too small. The length of the prop blades is the same on both pictures and the model looks a lot bigger for the same prop length. The model's prop has a 43.2 mm diameter. The prop of the real Spit is 3279 mm that translates to 45.5 mm in 1:72nd scale. The prop tip shape is iffy, if anything.

GAUSA1004 NEW!

2000 produced | 6" (15.4cm) wingspan

I sure hope our brave Spitfire pilot can get an engine re-start it looks like he has the altitude but he might get clipped by a marauding Butcher Bird or 109 in the process.>>
