Re: Pre Pro Berlin Expess

Just found this:

When you have Bill Overstreet on your tail, not even a daring maneuver such as flying right under the Eiffel tower is going to save you, as this ME109 pilot discovered the hard way. In the spring of 1944, Bill Overstreet of the famous 357th FG was hot on the tail of a German ME109G. The pilot of the 109 flew right over Paris where German anti-aircraft artillery was heavy, probably in hopes they would solve his problem by eliminating Bill and his P51C named the “Berlin Express”. Bill persisted through intense flak closing the gap with the enemy fighter. Already hit in the engine, as a last resort the ME109 pilot aimed his aircraft toward the imposing Eiffel tower and in a breathtaking maneuver flew right under it. Even this was not enough to shake Bill as he followed right behind scoring several more hits in the process. The German ME109 crashed moments later and Bill escaped the heavy flak around Paris by flying low and full throttle over the river.
Here is the encounter described in Bill's own words: "I had followed this 109 from the bombers when most of the German fighters left. We had a running dogfight and I got some hits about 1500 feet, He then led me over Paris where Many guns were aimed at me. As soon as he was disabled, I ducked down just over the river (smaller target for the Germans ). Followed the river until I was away from Paris." - Bill
When asked what was around the tower at the time, Bill said, “I'm not sure, I was a little busy.” Quite understandable!

Re: Pre Pro Berlin Expess

Anyone have any pics or descriptions of the Malcom Hood and non-malcom hood variants?

I can definitely tell a B from a D, but the hood talk has me curious..

The difference in the hoods or "canopies" is that one is a birdcage and the other is "blown"..

Re: Pre Pro Berlin Expess

So when are these guys going to make an Old Crow? I figured a B model of that plane would have been a no brainer....

Yeah?! I sound like a broken record, but I hope they do "Old Crow". If not, maybe Dragon will. Dragon has done several P-47s from the same group, it may not stop them with their P-51B. Though in the end I'd prefer a Gemini version. I'm becoming a great fan of the 357th FG.

Re: Pre Pro Berlin Expess

Not trying to start a war or anything here, but I hope we see some other schemes than those 8th FG guys...... Not taking anything away from those pilots and groups, but there were A LOT of other fighter groups and pilots that fought in the war and made great contributions as well.

that being said, an OLD CROW with white wall tires would be sweet!!

Re: Pre Pro Berlin Expess

Lt Overstreet had 2 Berlin Express P-51's. One was a B model and the other was the C model. The B model was the 51 that belonged to Maj Anderson before it was passed along to Overstreet. The C model was the one that was painted part NMF and Olive drab.

I think the reason why we are seeing so many Mustangs of the 357th being done was because they were the 3rd highest scoring FG in WW2 next to the 354th, and the 56TH FG. Plus when you have famous pilots like Anderson, Yeager, Carson, Peterson just to name a few that always helps as well! But I think we see alot of other Mustang groups represented as well so I think they all get their fair share.

Re: Pre Pro Berlin Expess

I'd love an Old Crow 'C model too - so much so I gave up on waiting.

It's still a work in progress (using the Gemini Berlin Express), but here's an early pic...
