GRAF1002
Supermarine Spitfire Mk LFIXe (MK 356)
No 144 Wing (Canadian) 443 "Hornet" Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force, 1944.
(Now flying with the 'The Battle of Bruitian Memorial Flight')

Box Data
The Supermarine Spitfire is arguably the most famous fighter aircraft of the second World War. The type was in constant prduction throughtout WWII and some 22,000 aircraft were built before production ceased in the post war years.

The Mark IX Spitfire was a thoroughbred fighting machine. Developed from the Spitfire Mk V variant, it was a direct response to the threat posed by the Luftwaffe's new Focke Wulf FW 190A, which made a dramatic impact on the European Air War. So potent was this new German fighter that the RAF suspended operations over occupied Europe, as losses began to mount.

The Spitfire MK IX was more than a match for the FW 190 and became the Spitfire with which the RAF took to the offensive against Luftwaffe units in Northern Europe.

The beautiful lines of the Spitfire were somehow enhanced with the introduction of the Low Altitude machines. With optimized engines and 'clipped wings', these Spitfires were designed to conduct low level fighter sweeps over Northern France. The clipped wings yielded an increased roll rate, which was invaluable during low altitude dogfights.

MK356 is still flying sorties to this day, but in a much more sedate manner. She flies with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, based at RAF Conisngsby, in the UK.

Cool Re: New Gemini Aces Pics!

What a beaut!! I really dig the clipped wings. Got it on pre-order, along with the next wave. Any pics of the others?

Yes, I'll have pics of all of the aircraft this weekend. I may redo the Spitfire too. I didn't realize that the angle was so unflattering. I was busier than expected last night and rushed the process. I've also recieved my hi-res stock for Corgi 2007. I offered to replace all of the images for the "Corgi 07" threads, but I haven't heard back from Gavin yet. If it's cool with him I'll post about 100 new pics for those items this week.

Harry,
Are you going to the Commerative Air Force hangar dance tonight? If so I'll see you there.

Phewww...thank goodness for that.......I like it then. I like the clipped- winged Spits better than the pointy-ended ones..

Re: New Gemini Aces Pics!

When Jetfan comes back from his holidays he will explain why pointy wings made the Spit the most agile of all the WW11 fighters Skunky. Ps ,please send my mums £5 back. These Gemini aces models look very good. I just cannot get my wallet to keep up with all these tasty lookin aircraft. i think I will have to invest in this Spitfire it looks perfect to me.

Question Re: New Gemini Aces Pics!

Hey,
Does this picture seem too dark or darker than ones I've previously posted?
I'm showing the site to a friend on his computer and the Spit looks almost black. I didn't know if this was just his computer or the pic itself. I took this one with my new camera, and I'm still learning how to use it effectively. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: New Gemini Aces Pics!

Does look dark to me Mark, but I'm not the best gauge as my screen runs a bit dark anyway.
