Re: Hun Hunter Pics

Not sure about Boche - I think that dates for the first wold war, but the Hun's were a germanic tribe from Roman(?) times

Boche I think stems from the first war, The French used it as an insult to the Germans , I think it means Rogue.

Re: Hun Hunter Pics

Sorry for bringing back this thread, but I was wondering why the Germans are called 'Huns' or 'Boches'. Can anyone enlighten me? This just came to me last night when I was admiring my own Hun Hunter P-51B.

It is from World War I. The propaganda of the allies gave the germans that names. Especially after the first gas attack at Ypern in 1915.

We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives.

Surely every has heard of "Attila the Hun," right? This was a Central-Asian group of tribes, actually, but because they invaded a large part of central Europe (including what would now be Germany), I guess they somehow remain associated with the Germans. But they were not Germanic in origin.

I think the term "Hun" as applied to the Germans was largely a British invention. Apparently it stemmed from a speech given by Kaiser Wilhelm II around the end of the Boxer Rebellion in China when German expeditionary troops arrived and were a little too enthusiastic in carrying out the command to "make the name German remembered in China for a thousand years." Wilhelm invoked the 5th Century Huns, noted for their brutality. Guess he had a Republican speechwriter.
