Pictures: 1/72 PLAAF J-10

I finally got my hands on a copy, and I have mixed feelings about it. It looks like an accurate representation of the real J-10 but unfortunately badly executed, sloppy and rough in many places.
The model is still a nice addition to my PLAAF collection (recently expanded with the addition of the HM J-7). Here go the first batch of pictures.

Re: Pictures: 1/72 PLAAF J-10

I have put the ROCAF F-16A from Dragon for comparison. Notice the pitot tube? it is metal, and amazingly accurate, a photo of the real thing for comparison.
It was nice they put details in the panel, but it wasn't enough because the overlooked the rest of the cockpit, which was left grey, the same base coat on the fuselage! underbelly bombs are also left grey when they should be olive drab (much like their US counterparts)

That flight stick looks a bit oversized. looks like he would need both hands on the stick for it!
canopy could use a little touch up paint too

Same here, there are more problems than you can see in the pictures, but "at least they tried" and now it is sitting with (not perfect but much nicer) PLAAF Su-27 models from Witty.

This example was one of three available at this model shop in hong kong and it was a bit pricey compared to Wittys or HMs but what you'd expect from Gaincorp.
This time they didn't even bother printing the box in English which makes me think they don't intend to release it outside China and the models available here were "leaked".

I think Gaincorp is not worried about the export market anymore, they must have good access to Chinese military specifications because their Chinese models are getting more accurate overall...but have no idea how to make them more attractive as models.

Re: Pictures: 1/72 PLAAF J-10

Mine arrived via an ebay dealer in Hong Honk yesterday.

As already said, not the best models ever but they are unusual models and variety is nice!

I like them, faults and all...

Interestingly, the latest issue of International Air Power Review has a big article on the J-10.

How does the paint job look? Gaincorp usually does a decent job with paint.

The paintjob is unremarkable. If you are talking about the quality of execution, there are some bumps and smudges, I had a tampo "faux-pas" on the starboard ejection seat sign...they tried to cover it up by washing it down but it was still there when I got it, I used fine sandpaper to get rid of it, but since the correctly printed placard was overimposed, i got the right one a bit faded with my sanding.
There was also a bit of a paint/mould problem with the windshield, the paint did not cover all of it because the clear plastic part was "overcut" from wherever it was attached (my guess), I already took care of it but it still shows that the clear canopy part does not really fit the metal fuselage very tightly, but that's a mould problem.
In the accuracy department, I have to point out that some ordnance come in the same color as the belly, and it is very wrong, because bombs should be olive drab, as the box illustration (a photo of the real J-10) shows, the droptanks should be in a lighter gray too as pictures I've seen show. Missiles are flat white in the model, but I am confused as to what color "live" and "dummy" missiles are supposed to look like.
Hope this helps, and don't get me wrong, I am not dumping this model at all, it is complementing my expanding Chinese fighter collection.
