Which Phantom should I keep?

I've just bought two CDC Phantoms (a Sundowner and a Black Bunny) and have the opportunity to buy a Robin Olds Mig Killer. The thing is, I can only keep one and the choice is very hard.

Which would you recommend? Which is the most collectable/valuable? They're all fabulous and have their own pluses, but my collection has a strict rule of only one version of each plane....

Looking forward to your thoughts...

(Thanks to Aikens & Flying Mule for pics...)

Re: Which Phantom should I keep?

All three are nice but I'd take the MiG-Killer.

But if you get one try to get the older version without the wing-tanks.
The ones on the pic you provided are ugly!

Cheers,
AA

At the risk of stating the obvious, I'd say keep all three.
But if I were faced with your dilemma, then I'll go with AA on the MiG-Killer.

Re: Which Phantom should I keep?

If the Sundowner is all pad-printed graphics I'd seriously consider making that "The One". I've had 10 or so different /CDC/FM phantoms in my collection and I like that one the best for finish and paint application and it just looks snazzy.

Plus, it is one of the first Phantoms released by CDC prior to FM taking over and it's since been retired, so it could be a good one for collecting value down the road -- who knows.

The Olds is tough to beat for historical significance/pilot history and the Phantom is just "at home" in the camo paint scheme -- there are three different versions of it though. One with all pad printed graphics but with the fat wingtip tanks as pictured (these are actually centerline tanks that FM applied as wingtip tanks for some foolish reason), the original CDC version with no tanks and water-slide decals for the nose, and the newest version that has corrected wintip tanks, a centerline tank (optional) and all pad-printed markings. I just got this version, and it's the nicest of the 3 to me. (I sold my original, CDC version without tanks to get this one.)

I'd say the Black Bunny is the most expendable of the three -- it's going for peanuts on ebay lately as a couple sellers have been dumping 'em. ($30-$35). The Olds will likely fetch around $50, as would the Sundowner.

But it really comes down to personal preference -- just keep the one you think looks the coolest, or has the most historical significance to you in your collection, if that's your bag.

Re: Which Phantom should I keep?

I have had all of them at one time or another.
I sold the Black Bunny and the Sundowner and kept the Robin Olds Phantom.
The reason was simple the history of the man that flew the Scat Phantom Gen. Robin Olds.

I also have and love all three. If I had to choose, I'd go with Sundowners (hard to beat a sharksmouth plane) otherwise it'd be the Robin Olds bird.

You should see the Sundowner pic in my archive - the link is on the left! I guess it'll help you a lot

Re: Which Phantom should I keep?

Well.... I received the Mig Killer today and it's the early CDC version without wing tanks, so that's definitely going to stay in the collection.... especially as I read up a little on the pilot. Black Bunny will certainly go back on the market, but Sundowners might hang around for a little.... it does look cool!

Thanks to everyone for feedback and for voting.
