Re: Franklin Mint B-17 Sweet and Lovely

I don't have it it, and thus can't take pics But it's a somewhat popular Corgi bird in 1:72 I think -- I'm considering the FM version for about half of MSRP... I'm trying to "simplify" my displayed collection by getting rid of many smaller models and replacing them with one big 'un! I have a FM B-24 and B-26 already, and have owned a B-25, so I know what I'm in for in regard to size/weight and am generally familiar with FM's caveats. I was just curiouis if the B-17, particularly this model, was more grossly inaccurate or poorly made than "your average FM". I actually think the B-24 is quite nice.

I like the quality and detail of 1:72 but I just think the larger scales display better, and right now I'm trending towards having one 1:48 or larger model of a particular aircraft type than several smaller ones. (Props that is, as you may have seen I've been dabbling in 1:200 jets... )

I just don't know if I could actually bring myself to sell my Corgi 1:72 Forts -- even if I can't display 'em!

PappyB, be cautious and if financially possible avoid selling your 1/72 models, especially the 'heavies'. I went through the same phase where I gravitated towards the larger scales but found after some time that 1/72 is just more practical, together with a smattering of the big 1/35 scales and plenty of 1/48 fighters (WWII era). All I'm saying is keep your 1/72 or you're likely to kick yourself later .

Sage advice Card-o, sage advice.

I should probably just gather up one each of the 1:48 heavies and keep what I have in 1:72... or at least most of it. If I end up grabbing the 1:48 Bit O' Lace now instead, I will probably get rid of my Corgi version for example. And I have a couple Libs I could live without in 1:72. But I suspect you're right. If I dump the "gems" (Memphis Belle, 909, strawberry bitch, Lancs) I will regret it at some point.

Re: Franklin Mint B-17 Sweet and Lovely

Well Sally over at Aikens was kind enough to check their stock for me and the model does not include guns in the nose, so it's out for me.

I could swear they came with the nose guns. I'll have to go to the in-laws office and check. I wouldn't put it past my faulty memory to incorrectly recall my own Corgi S&L 1/72 as the FM 1/48 Fort!

What I am sure of is that my father in law does have the 1/48 S&L b/c he got a pallet delivered to his home with a crapload of FM planes. He called me over when he got the delivery and was complaining about the size of the FM heavies (he ordered the B-17, B-24, JU-52, 2 C-47's, He-111, 3 B-25's and a B-26 at the same time!). As he was complaining my devious little mind was thinking how I could "liberate" the S&L from him (perhaps offering to trade for my Corgi Yankee Doodle?!?...hmmmm....).

BTW Pappy do you still want to see pictures of the MB or Nine o' Nine?

Re: Franklin Mint B-17 Sweet and Lovely

Looking for opinions from owners of this model -- the good, the bad, the ugly?

Thanks!

Pappy; not just 'Blasphemy', but 'double-Blasphemy' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You'd be lynched (for your Corgi) Bit-O'-Lace on the Brit' forum...... (DAF).

When you (finally) see an 'F.M.' Boeing B.17 then I reckon you'll be disappointed = BIG-TIME

As you know, I was on an 'F.M' 1/48th 'Blitz' between Jan & March of this year (& I've yet to post some pix of those accquisitions).

Well, I got to see some 'F.M' B.17's 1st-hand (without the burden of ownership !!!!!!)

Believe me; the nose join is HIDEOUS (as in 'The Munsters')........it's a real horror.... (unlike their 1/48th B.24).

It looks like the nose section is grafted on, almost as an afterthought !!!!!!!

Trust me, mate !!!!!!! keep your Corgi 'BO'L & your '909' , 'StrawBy' '24 & your Lanc's.

Buy an 'F.M' B.17 at your peril

Yes, please! (and that's quite an order your father in law put in ).

LOL Hornchurch thanks for the reality injection! It's just that I have a B-24, B-26, B-25 (on the way), now in 1:48 and I'd like to complete the 'set" of the mainstream US bombers in the scale... if the FM is at least reasonable accurate, I can take a seam or two or three. I'll have to find a shop around here where I can oggle one in person. I remember seeing the MB and not being impressed -- the colors looked way off to me if I recall. But I don't remember a hideous nose join seam... as for being lynched on the DAF... well, that ain't hard to incite -- don't get me wrong, though, i appreicate our brothers in zinc across the pond

I've just had the BOL now in 1:72 for a while and the two FM bombers I think I can get for a great deal are the BOL and S&L... wouldn't make sense to have both. But if the FM version really stinks, than I should get it just to get it, either.

Thumbs up Re: Franklin Mint B-17 Sweet and Lovely

Hey PappyB,
I've seen some heavies with bad join lines and some that look good. I looked at (2) "General Ike" B-17's in the same shop and the first had a bad join line and the second one looked great. The B-17 I bought is probably one of the most impressive die-cast in my collection and probably gets the most attention of people who look at the collection. Here's an old thread on FM heavies.

Yeah, it's funny how its the same way with Corgi's heavies -- some of theirs have terrible joins and others don't... but you don't hear the same amount of complaining

I'll find a place to looks some over "live" and see what's what

I'll go spelunk that older thread, too, thx

Re: Franklin Mint B-17 Sweet and Lovely

Here you are Pappy! Sorry it took so long. Weekend was a bit busy and just found time this morning to dig for the B-17's. This is the first time I've taken the MB out of the box. Also included some other aircraft as a bonus and for size reference.

BTW, gaps are by no means as prominent as they appear in the photos. The heft of these planes is second to none. I really like them the more I look at them, especially b/c my initial reaction was very critical. I don't think you'll be disappointed, besides who else is going to make one in this scale?

Enjoy!!
