Re: SBD-1 Marine Dauntless review

Thanks AA, it's always good to hear from the king of 1/48 himself.

Thanks man!

I currently have three SBDs:

B632 SBD-3 Dauntless USN VS 41, Operation "Torch".
B934DB MK 1 UK Royal Navy FAA Evaluation JS 997 WW 11 Limited (780pcs) UK Market Release.
B937SBD-3 Douglas Dauntless USN VS2-C2 Lt. J. Leppia & J. Lisca, Battle of the Coral Sea, 7 victories, 1942.

I pretty much like the mold, one of FMs better WWII models.

Anyway, yours has a nice and striking paint job which makes it very tempting.

Cheers,
AA

I bought a great new book on the SBD. Check it out. Plus new display pics from my office at work.

Cover:

Back: (depicts Franklin Mint's plane! and comes with decals to boot)

Office shots:

C-47 flyby...

I may be mistaken, but from what I've seen on the internet, this 1/48 display of prewar (yellow wing) diecast a/c may be the only one of its kind... Thanks for looking!

Re: SBD-1 Marine Dauntless review

Excellent reviews and thanks for the reference books above, Ara1!

I will be ordering the 1/32nd version from HM of the same pre-war colour scheme, so I will have to let go of my FM one for a steal, sadly!

Yes flyXwire my friend, you will be getting the SBD-2 version, prewar as you said, and with the smaller carburetor scoop. Yours will be US Navy and not Marines, and will have tons of 1/32 detail and features. I will be in awe !

I went ahead and made the pre-order as soon as I saw your post a day ago. Incidentally, could please send me a 'pm' for order info of that book you have? TY!

Re: SBD-1 Marine Dauntless review

I didn't mention it, but the book is in English, and the free decals come in 1/72, 1/48, and 1/32 sizes. I'll try to post a shot of the decal sheet.

The book is like a souped-up Detail & Scale book, without model kit reviews but excellent plans and color profiles. Lots of period cockpit shots, and a fairly good narrative, including a detailed account of the 1943 combat and 1992 recovery of two US SBD crewmen lost fighting the Germans.

Nice looking pre war line up! Wildcat, Dauntless and the Buffalos look great in their pre war colors.
