lanslide - Strip off the paint - you'll find that they're actually plastic. All of my F-86's are - both Armour as well as SpecCast. - JY

| Re: Armour F-86 Sabre Opinions Greetings, I have the JASDF F-86F-40 but I have not taken it out of the box. Can you tell me what is incorrect about its wings? I suspect that it has something to do with wing length. | |||||||||||||

Hi John - short of getting up the 'Tailpipe' I can't look any closer (4 - 5 inches away is good enough for my Eagle-eyes) THEY'RE ACTUALLY METAL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been making plastic-kits (Airfix) since 1967 & bought my 1st Die-cast (a tiny F.4-U Corsair) in 1969 !!!!!!!! Long spells in Automotive & Motorcycle Trade, as well as behind the scenes knowledge in Britains No.1 I.P.M.S. Emporium (which gave me rich pickings & 1st choice on Tamiya King-Tigers, He-219's & the like.....) I've gained enough 'knowledge' on 'planet-Earth' to be able to tell Metal (ZINC) from Plastic THEY ARE METAL......... (phoned a mate in London who bought one of the same 'batch' as mine = one of his tail-planes snapped of (packing-up to move house) & he had to 'superglue' back in place !!!!!!!!!! There WAS a 'stack' of 'Beautious-Butch' there at the same time, but one silver '86 looks much like another (bar unit-markings !) so I by-passed them..........(so did he !).......so..... Can't comment on those...... Regarding your 2nd (quoted) line - It would appear so ! Your more than welcome to 'Travel 'cross the Atlantic' to find out ! You say you've got "every" Sabre (that) 'Armour' put out ????????????? I'm assuming that means you ACTUALLY HAVE this very-same Camouflaged F.86 ? The Plane has an 'individual-a/c , I/d 'Letter' Can you tell me the Letter & (RAF) serial No. to see if it IS the same a/c (model) as you have ???????? The 'sticker' at the nose-end of the box says.....B.11 B.582 (the latter being the 'Catalogue' No.) Oh, & welcome to the forum (mesa)

Hornchurch - Perhaps on yours and mine, they are - perhaps on some? I've had a couple break off trying to reset "glue" lines that were done improperly and upon investigation found plastic surfaces. Well, you know what they say about "ass-u-me"... - I "assumed" they were all pretty much made the same - it is entirely possible that at some point they may have switched to using metal ones - obviously, I'm not going to strip the paint off of every one to find out. My 2 B11B582's are packed away at the moment - I actually have two of them. They're listed as "F4's", but I'm assuming they meant to say "Mk4" Sabres. The one with the shark's teeth painted on the lower fuselage just in front of the wing attachment point. They were commonly available a few years back - I got mine from a dealer down in San Diego, CA. Are we talking about the same plane - I'm assuming we are. Here's a photo of the model. Don't know how many were made, but my dealer friend told me (back then) that he could get as many as I wanted. I liked the scheme so I ordered two of them. Since I didn't have the display room at that time, I left them in their respective boxes. I've seen them offered quite a bit on eBay in the past, although I haven't seen one in several months now except for one recently for around $60.00US. - JY ![]()

| Re: Armour F-86 Sabre Opinions [quote=John Youngs;125340] Hi John - YEP that's the same one, sitting next to me now !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Honestly thought (National-Bias, aside) that this was by FAR & AWAY the best 'scheme' going............. Couldn't resist it Like I said in my 1st post on this thread......... If only the 'roundel'(s) weren't 'cock-eyed' on the others I would have bought another one !!!!!!!!!!!!! £20 for a £47 beauty is nothing !!!!!!!!! I STILL Reckon this is one of Armour/(F.M.'s) very best offerings = I LOVE it. I'm in agreement with you.........should be 'listed' as Mk.4's Ironically the base these flew from (when NOT in Germany) West Raynham (C.F.U.) is also in Norfolk, right in between a Douglas Boston Base & various B.24 bases scattered nearby (10 minute drive in the car !!!!!!!!) It's ONLY JUST been sold-off by the M.o.D. (sadly, what a waste !!!!!!) | ||||||||||||||

Reason: typo
Hm, I have to admit that I don't like the Sabre mold that much... I only have the one German limited (Canadair something). But that brit really looks nice... I think I should track one down.

Mesa - Correct. The F-86F-40 or "dash-40" as it was originally referred to by NAA engineers, was created by not only utilizing the "6-3" leading edge, but reverting to wing "gravity" slats, as well as adding a foot-long extension to the tip of each wing (2-foot over extension for each plane). This modification is easily spotted on the real plane by noting how the outboard ends of the ailerons, instead of ending at the wingtips, now, on the "-40", end approximately a foot before the tips. This is also a common modification done to many of the restored and flying Canadian CL-13B/Mk6 Sabres flying in the US - most of these planes have had the "-40" wingtip extension mod performed on them. While the plane is just slightly slower in flight with these tips added, the plane also has much better maneuverability, as well as a lower landing and takeoff speed, as well as a shorter landing and takeoff distance. The Armour model does not reflect this change - hence my reluctance to obtain one of these in the past. They simply used (as they have in so many different models over the years) the same old mold and painted it up to resemble a JASDF Sabre; not caring about historical accuracy... - So yes, you guessed correctly on this. - If you look carefully at the enclosed photo of a restored Canadair CL-13B/Mk6 that has this modification, you'll see what I'm talking about. Look at the wingtips & you'll notice the extensions! -JY ![]()

AA - How's it going? What's funny about this paint scheme (B11B582 - Mk4 Sabre) is that this is almost the identical type of scheme that Canada adopted for it's OFU (Overseas Ferry Unit) Sabres during most of the late 50's and early 60's. It is visually striking, especially since it's surface is actually "semi-gloss", as opposed to a straight "flat" or matte finish as seen on the German (Canadair-produced) CL-13B/Mk6. Thought it a bit weird for the location of the shark's teeth - I would've thought the more traditional location of at or near the nose air intake would've been a bit more appropriate, but, as they say, each to his own. I bought mine "sight unseen" (except for that stupid artist's conception sketch you see in past Armour/FM catalogs), but glad I did! Pad-printed graphics, too - glad to see that! Any luck on getting your B11D745 or B11E124 F-15's?? Still lookin' for ya! - JY

Hi John, yes its been a while. I have too much work to do and spend too much $ on diecast in return. And you? How are things? Mmmmmh, semi-gloss does look nice. I prefer the painted Sabres/Canadairs over the "bare-metal" versions. I had one of those and got rid of it pretty soon. I just did a quick research, The B11B582's availability is pretty good as far I can tell. If I won't get it here some are available in the UK. And even pad-printed? Cool! Nope, unfortunately not. But the last couple of days I ordered a lot of other FM/A's. My Hornet collection is getting more and more complete. And what about your collection? Any nice additions? AA
