Give me your thoughts on the F4U Corsair

As the title of this thread imply, I would like to hear/read your opinions on this bird and tell me why I should get one? Thanks.

I like it because:
- FM didn't this one up.
- I like 'em big (1/48)
- pad printed markings (on my Pappy Boyington F-4)
- nice heft
- good overall apperance

I would post a pic if my girl wouldn't have my cam...

I also got some Mack-It "build & paint your own" if you should be interested.

Re: Give me your thoughts on the F4U Corsair

I am nuts for corsairs, and a fan of Mr. Boyington's (obviously).. however, my FM Boyington went out the door recently when I thinned out the collection a bit.... it was one of the first cuts.
The profile was just too far off for me--it was very chunky, not at all sleek like it should be. I actually prefer Speccast's Corsairs so I held on to my SC Boyington instead. (stellar paint job, much more subtle engraving of the panel lines, and the profile looks right to me--then again, there are those concave wings and I believe, no guns, and no antenna . )

This pic really shows what I'm talking about with FM's version: (Note the ugly gap where the wing/fuselage join, too.)

It just looks a bit like a pregnant sow to me -- the fuselage between the cowl and cockpit just looks too thick, and throws the whole thing off for me.

It's tough to compare SP and FM as the two are really approaching the subject from completely different perspectives--SP is delivering more of a nostalgic gimmicky toy rather than attempting a historically accurate representation of the real deal. Their mold is much older, too, and much more out of date. (I still like 'em though--I have many SP corsairs and don't plan on getting rid of them anytime soon.)

I remember a good thread about this a few months ago where Skysurfer had some excellent observations about both the FM and Speccast Corsairs, you might want to dig around for that.

I would really like to see someone else come in and tackle this bird in 1:48 for us as there is much room for improvement IMHO.

Re: Give me your thoughts on the F4U Corsair

Thanks to both of you again, gentlemen! PappyB, I'm so glad you chimed in and was actually looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this bird. I think you've done a great job
in reviewing and giving comparisons both pros and cons to the SC and FM Corsairs, and I think I have enough to go on and will go with that for now. Thanks ACE!

Re: Give me your thoughts on the F4U Corsair

The FM Corsair is not bad looking..I have both VMF-214 Corsairs that FM makes...I also have Specast Corsairs as well...
The Specast ones are not that bad looking and they do fill the gap on some Sqns you can't find ...I hope Carousel or Eagles makes a good F4U Corsair in the future..

Plus, I'll bet it has exposed screw heads!

I like my Boyington, but it has decals instead of being pad printed .

Is it a CDC original or FM re-issue?
