Are gaps fixable?

Last edited by trex0770 : 10-17-2007 at 05:50 PM. Reason: new title
Just a question, has anyone tried taking their FM's or Corgi's apart to try and fix the gap problems (since these are the two companies who seem to have the biggest gap issues)? By fixing, I mean did you do anything (short of filling with putty) to tighten the seam? For example, alot of the Corgi B-17's seem to have a gap between the halves and I was curious to know whether there was excess plastic, metal, etc. that prevented the halves or nose portion or whatever from fitting tightly.

It just doesn't make sense to me that a company, like Corgi and FM, would okay a new release that had issues with gaps.

Anyway, if you've tried this, were you successful and was the gap more of a mold problem than an assembly problem? I'm asking because it seems like there's a large variance within the same models. To me, this would indicate an assembly issue and fixable.

Thanks for your reply in advance!

Re: Gaps fixable

I've never tried to take one apart. I've bought most of mine from a hobby shop where I could look them over pretty good before purchasing and have been pretty lucky with the ones I ordered on the internet. The most variation I've noticed for gaps on a Franklin Mint product was also on the B-17.

I've only taken one apart and that was a Corgi Lancaster (Rhodesia). I know, I know.....the blasphemy! I actually took it apart to repair damage incurred during shipping. I won it on Ebay and the seller didn't have the original box so packed it in newspaper(now that's blasphemy) where it promptly broke (props, tail, landing gear, nose). Needless to say, I was p.o.ed and got a huge refund. He also shipped a SB B-24 that fell apart too (although I didn't have to take that apart to fix it).

The Lanc is mostly repaired but I've also got to figure a way to attach the props back on and keep them functional.

Re: Gaps fixable

Someday I'll have to do something about those "grand canyon" sized gaps on my FM F-4J "Showtime" Phantom!
