Re: FM F4F Wildcat vs. Carousel 1 F4F Wildcat

Looking at the Carousel 1 vs FM Wildcats, I've got to say that FM really did a better job. The FM doesn't have the interchangable gear option of the C1, but without a stand, what difference does that make. There's no silly cardboard display stand either in FM's Wildcat. But when it comes to overall detail, such as the radio antennae, FM clearly wins. The rivet detail is a bit much, and the canopy does have its framing off near its rear. The C-1 Wildcat is missing its tail antenna, and the turtleback antenna seems a bit too short, plus the soft plastic C1 uses means it will probably need some form of viagra over time. C1 wins on livery and presentation, but for the money if an FM can be obtained for a lower price, it is definately a better deal.

So my hope is that C1 stuff goes on sale too, that way it would be worth buying. Same goes for FM. Still, for my money I can't picture spending nearly 70 bucks for a Wildcat in 1/48 when I have it in 1/72. I like the Wildcat, but I'll likely wait till one comes out in 1/32 metal....hear that Hobbymaster.

I have both and I have to give the nod to FM. In fact, I think this is FM's finest model.

I think the cockpit detail is very well done (the seat even includes the harness). I also like the rivet detail (it is very similar to the best 1/48 scale plastic model of the F4F by Tamiya). I also think the panel detail is better than Carousel 1's (C1's panel detail is too wide and toylike to me). The biggest problem with FM's is that the tail wheel looks toylike. C1's cockpit color looks wrong. Both models are very close and I would probably just go for the least expensive one which is usually FM.

I have received my Red Rippers F4F-4 Wildcat last Saturday night and I'll echo Skysurfer's observations of the FM Wildcat here. This IS definitely FM's best effort and it wouldn't be an exageration for me to claim that it is, by far, the best rendition of the Wildcat to date! You really need to see it up close to believe what I just said. As many have noted about "rivet" details being a bit much...the way I see it, it really adds a very nice texture to the skin panels and doesn't serve as a distraction at all, though I wished FM added a few more on the nose cowling area? My example is just about perfect and I haven't really noticed any flaws the more I study it's profile. The sale price of this bird from JoePilot's site couldn't have come at a better time as I've waited till the price was right. I suppose I'll get the C1 Wildcat later when it's price drops as well, but my heart really belongs to the FM Wildcat!
