He 111 Greif

Where on the web can one locate a picture of this model (other than FM's promo picture):

Franklin Mint Armour Collection B11E391
Heinkel He 111, Luftwaffe KG 55 Greif, Villacoublay, France, Autumn 1940

Or, if anyone now owns one, can you post pics? Is the swazi on the tail?

(I can't figure out why TFM hasn't posted pics )

Re: He 111 Greif

I've been trying to locate some pics as well and am also wondering about the swastika.

Re: He 111 Greif

Every place I have checked has the model you are asking about (and a picture of), including the Flying Mule, Crossroads, OnMark, etc., etc.

There is no swaztika on the tail, just like the Corgi "Chartres" He 111, which is from the same unit. My understanding is the "night" camouflage employed by this unit was painted over top of the swaztika, which is why you don't see it. As a side note, I believe Corgi's camo effect looks better than FM/Armour's.

But you guys probably prefer 1/48. To each their own.

Re: He 111 Greif

I checked all those sites again and didn't see any photo's of the FM plane yet, but thanks for the clarification into the camo scheme and the photo of the Corgi's model.

The picture you posted is FM's promo picture. That is all over the web. My original question is: does anyone know of pictures on the web OTHER than the promo picture? I want to see for myself if Corigi's camo effect looks better than FMs. But thanks for the info on the swazi; interesting.

Sorry I didn't understand that's what you wanted. The promo picture was the only one I saw.

Re: He 111 Greif

My experinece with Franklin Mint 1/48's is that they don't do complex camouflage very well. The patterns are often simplified beyond reasonable expectations, esp. Luftwaffe squigglies, mottlings and dots.

I've passed up certain versions of their Bf 109, Ju 52 and Me 262 due to my observation of the respective finishes.

FM does better with solid (one color) camos, multi-color splinter schemes and basic disruptive schemes (ala Spits and Hurris).

Re: He 111 Greif

A couple of pictures of the real thing. It looks to me like the black was applied over the regular finish. Can't say 100% but gray does not look accurate.

Interesting pictures and information. Thanks for posting!! The mottled camoflauging should be black then? FM's promo picture doesn't look anything like black to me. Canuck is right (if this promo shot is an accurate representation of the real model), Corgi's looks a LOT better.

I have some photos of a Do217 that shows the worst paint job you could ever see. I think the painter was given 3 minutes to do the job so the paint was just thrown at the aircraft. its a lesson to us that not all schemes were carefully done and to exact specification.

God Bless America.
