Re: What do you think of FM's P-38?

I have massaged a little more info out of him. I guess when I asked him if he flew YIPPEE in the 70's I threw him for a proverbial loop. He said "no way...had to be...had to be..." and then I butted in "maybe 60's?" He replied..."hmm...maybe early 60's". I went over to his house today to move some boxes and he said he thinks after looking at some old photos (none of YIPPEE but he flew 2 other P-38's that week) it was right after the war...about 1948-49 that this happened. His clue is he is certain that ORD was still Orchard Place at the time. We had only talked about the flight once before and I don't know where I got Meigs Field and 1970's. LOL. He has about a thousand stories to tell so I must have mixed a couple togther. He was in National Geographic in 1967 flying a glider that was launched from Meigs Field...maybe that's where I screwed up.

If he remembers anything else I'll post it...LOL.

If I minded that, (exposed screws) I would have stuck to plastic modeling.

Right with ya.

Re: What do you think of FM's P-38?

Thanks to a few collectors who PM'd me and e-mailed me wanting to know more about my father's encounter with YIPPEE...my dad became very bright-eyed and excited to tell his story and suggested that we offer the model he was keeping for himself to one of you great collectors. We have listed the item with my dad's handwritten account of how he ended up "aiming" YIPPEE from an Iowa airshow to ORD back in '49. Yes we finally figured out the year...but it wasn't easy with all the memories taking up 66 years of aviation love that he has enjoyed. At first I didn't think he wanted to part with the model but he told me..."no, I have it all right up here" and he pointed to his temple. "Let's send the model to someone who would enjoy it". On the e-bay auction you will see a smiling picture of him as he writes his account of YIPPEE.

Here is the thread that lists the ebay auction: http://www.themodelhangar.com/forum/...41453post41453

Thanks again everyone!

Cool story, CLLCTR5. I, like bsmith and probably most people on this forum, also enjoy stories like your Dad's.

Here's a cool shot of Yippee from a 1944 magazine.
