Re: What do you think of FM's P-38?

I would love to see "Yippee!" in 1/72. It's one of my favorite schemes as well.

Hey guys... You've almost convinced me! I gotta know one thing first however... are there ANY exposed screwheads anywhere in the undesides (booms, wheel wells, etc.)?

No. It is one FM model that doesn't have them. A good thing, although for me, a couple of small screw heads on the bottom of a diecast (if recessed) are simply par for the course. If I minded that, I would have stuck to plastic modeling.

It's no worse that the hole in the bottom of Corgi models for were you stick the stand...

Re: What do you think of FM's P-38?

I've got the photo-recon de Saint-Exupery version and it's a well made, good looking piece of die-cast (undercarriage doors a bit flimsy and I've seen minor fit issues on a couple of examples, just forward of the canopy) - I would give it a 3.5/5 overall.

Re: What do you think of FM's P-38?

Though I may be scorned by the combat purists for saying so, I absolutely love "Yippee", it's one of my favorite P-38 models.

My father flew YIPEEE from Iowa to Meigs Field back in the 1970's to help out with an air show!

OK here is a slightly more detailed and factual story about my father flying YIPPEE.

Some of this story is stll suspect ... I'll get to that in a second.

Seems that a friend of my father's worked with the line crew at Palwaukee airport in Wheeling Il. back in the late 30's and early-mid 40's. His name was Earl Reinert. My dad worked with him starting in about 1941 or so. After WWII He came to somehow own YIPPEE. This is where the details get sketchy...the story I remember is that my dad flew it from Iowa to Meigs Field for an airshow. Now my father tells me that he flew it from an airshow in Iowa to Orchard Place (now called O'Hare). He said it was probably in the early '60's but as most of us know ORD was renamed O'Hare just a few years after WWII. Being as how I am half-way intelligent...I'm not going to argue too much with him on that point. LOL.

Anyway, my dad indeed flew YIPEE. He has always said that the P-38 was one of the easiest and delightful aircraft to fly as any of the dozens and dozens that he flew...including the many high-tech sailplanes that he flew for the span of 30+ years setting records for distance-to-a-point and earning his triple diamond badge with the SSA. (Time aloft, distance to a point, altitude gained). An interesting note in this is that part of the reason why my father was asked to fly the YIPPEE back to Chicago was because Earl Reinert did not have a pilot's license! LOL.

Anyway he said he might write more of the story down if he remembers additional info so I will post it if and when.

Maybe I could get him to autograph his YIPPEE one of these days while he can still hold a pen (he is 80 and getting fraile).

Regards,

Randy
