1:72 Landing Craft - Target!

Spotted one of these today at a Target store in Tempe, AZ. Looked pretty good, but left it on the shelf.

Re: 1:72 Landing Craft - Target!

I saw them at Target today too and may have bought if they were $10. Considering that you can get the Dragon version with a beach landing diorama for $20 I passed on the FOV and will get the Dragon model.

Saw one at hobby town, they wanted $24.00. Are local Targets probably won't get them till next year. They finally got in the RAF white Hurricane.......

Re: 1:72 Landing Craft - Target!

I saw it this week and thought based on the photos I've seen the Dragon is a much nicer model- especially since the Dragon often sells well below list price.

Re: 1:72 Landing Craft - Target!

I've got both and each has positive details. The Dragon LCM is a waterline version and well weathered, but all plastic. The FOV LCM is not a waterline version so sits higher than the Dragon LCM. The LCM from FOV sold at Target is not weathered what so ever, which when compared to the Dragon LCM looks factory fresh rather than used and abused. FOV does make this same LCM weathered so it may look better when compared to the Dragon LCM. Finally, the FOV LCM does have some diecast in it, the entire fold down door is diecast where as the Dragon LCM has no diecast what so ever. Both come with drivers, a few figures, and some beach obstacles. However, Dragon does include more figures and beach obstacles than FOV does which may explain the price difference.

The FOV LCM from Target (or Toys R Us) retails at $15 which is half the price the Dragon LCM retails for ($30). So if you can take 5 minutes to weather the FOV LCM yourself, you save yourself half of what Dragon charges. If you'd rather get the FOV LCM weathered and ready to go, that version retails for $24-$25 so is still cheaper than the Dragon LCM. Of course you can find both LCM's from Dragon and FOV cheaper than the regular retail price if you take 5 minutes to search the Internet.

I'll shoot some comparison pictures and post them tomorrow.

Re: 1:72 Landing Craft - Target!

Thanks for the intel, Legio LXXll. I can add that the sole version of the FOV Landing Craft, sold in the U.K. ( as far as I can account for ) is the weathered version. There is a bit of rust and wear about it which is just enough to lift it out of the toy bracket into the representative model bracket. However, at about $35 they are expensive. I totally agree with you. If I could buy a few at $15, I would add the dents, scuffs and rust myself, and use them to display tanks. The FOV model is a good, solid article which deserves a good look if you are thinking about purchasing even one LCM3.

Also, because we have the famous film of a Dragon Wagon moving this landing craft along a road in preparation for the Rhine crossing, having the whole model would make a wonderful combination if you are planning to represent this little piece of history. ( you can see the Dragon Wagon hefting this load on one of the episodes from : " The World at War " )
