Re: Hurricane

Originally, I had two of these Hurricanes. I sold the desert tan/brown version on ebay and kept a brown/green version for my own enjoyment. I'm not an avid collector of British aircraft so I didn't want to spend any money on a Corgi Hurricane. My FoV one cost me $5.99. For that price just about anything looks good! I like mine and it serves my needs perfectly.

Agree with hworth, mike, and flyXwire that FoV is getting better in the mold, but quality control of the final product is still iffy. At least they're persistent.

And at the $12.99 price tag with lots of metal in the mould...can't beat the price!

Cool Re: Hurricane

I'd really like to add some good examples of a Hurricane to my hangher. I have Corgi's "Tuck", two Easy Model examples, which fill a gap, and the newest addition, the FOV 95229. The pickings for a decent look 1:72 Cane look pretty slim - any suggestions?

Re: Hurricane

Last week I saw 3 new FOV planes in boxes a bit from my Hurricanes. They were the Me 262, P40 and Zero. I must confess that they didn't look bad. Everything seemed upgraded and I liked the option to display some part of the engine or gun bays. I meant to start a thread but maybe you guys can give me some insights.

Hurricane versus new wave of releases

ZS-Van,
The new FOV releases (P-40, Zero and ME262) are light years ahead of the first wave of releases.

The Hurricane is a decent release, especially since the price is $12.00 at Target (A big box retailer in the U.S. I'm not sure if you have something similiar in South Africa?) and you get optional landing gear. The winter camo version and the nightfighter seem to be the winners. The other liveries are a little more questionable as the plane is cannon armed and the other liveries are Battle of France and BoB, which never saw MKII Huricanes. (In fact, I'm not sure any of the liveries depicted every saw a MKII, but I can suspend my disbelieve for the Nightfighter and Winter version.)

Seeing that it is mass marketed, it's not perfect and if you are looking for Hobby Master or Gemini quality, its not going to happen. It's aimed at the toy market, but its a nice toy.

The second wave of releases is FAR ahead of the first wave. The gear down option is the only one available at the big box retailers. The optional gear version is available for about $5.00 (U.S.) more from the Hobby Shops. The P-40 seems to be the gem of the bunch, as the engine cover comes off and you can practically see the engine oil dripped off the cylinder heads. (Yes, it's that detailed.)

Unfortunately the packaging is still a one time affair as you have to rip open the box to get the plane out, as opposed to other retailers reusable boxes.

Overall, the FOV Hurricanes are nice planes. They look great on your shelf and from 10 feet away you can't tell the difference. (Unless you are a real rivet counter.) I've got a couple of Hurricanes and Stukas and have enjoyed them immensely.

On close up inspection, you will see some sloppy paint and lose joints, so if you are looking for modeller standards, don't bother. You won't like them.

It really depends upon your own standards. I consider all my planes toys, and like to get them out and fly them around the room. (Childish, I know and I'm proud of it! ) If you are looking more for REAL accuraccy, FOV will not be for you.

Anything for a weird life.

The white painted Hurricane is a correct MK II aircraft. It is a Sea Hurricane that was on board HMS Nairana in 1944.

I'm with you on the Battle of Britain/France one being wrong. Don't know about the night version. I believe the SE Asia one is right.

Re: Hurricane

1250Ships,
Is the plane depicted cannon armed? I've seen this plate depicted on the forum before and I thought it looked machine gun armed. Other than the armament, is there that much outside difference inthe models? (That is basically how I sum it up. Cannon = MKII, macine guns = MKI.)

The actual plane was a Sea Hurricane MK IIc and was cannon armed. This was basically a navalized MK IIc and by 1944 would have been cannon armed. The MK IIc is listed as having a "slightly modified wing" but I have no clue what the modifcation entailed.

The core difference between the MK I and MK II models was the engine. The MK II got the more powerful Merlin XX engine. You can get a MK II Hurricane with machine guns- some MK IIa models had them for example.
