1/72 German armoured infantry

So....I promised on MHI that I would post pics of the finished figs. The problem is that these beasts are so freaking small my camera is crap, so this is the best I can do!
BTW, we're talking about this set:

Here my results after painting one set:

I really like these little soldiers, the details are just amazing. Though there are about half a dozen inaccuracies which probably won't ever bother you in this small scale. But...they're there...

Re: 1/72 German armoured infantry

They look great from what I can see. I used to have loads of 1/72 figures because they seemed to have the greatest availability of a wide range of subjects. I never had the skill to paint them, though. Great job. They rock. (Yeah, I really wanted to use this smilie so I found a way.)

Re: 1/72 German armoured infantry

Where did you get them and what brand are they Rubberduck? And why kind of inaccuracies?

It's Revell #02584, I picked them up in my local hobby shop, but they're quite new so you should have no problems to get them. The set is also available from Italeri (someone posted a link to a great 1/72 fig site on MHI where there was everything about it...I lost it)
Inaccuracies...well.
There are figs with greatcoats, some with wintersuits and some without any winter clothing at all. Plus, you get 3 frames with the same 16 figs each, so not really suitable for builing a unit.
Second, all figs are missing the breadbag for which there's absolutely no excuse. Almost every soldier would have one. Third, the MP44 guners have only small ammo pouches, but the proper MP44 pouches were quite large, so you have to improvise here. Fourth, all figs with anti-tank weapons have the MG tool pouch, but in fact they would still have their rifle with appropriate ammo pouches. Fifth, there's a mortar man but no assistant gunners or ammo crates. Sixth, the MG gunners have their MG deployed an a piece of wall which looks rather silly. No running MG gunners.
That's the most of it. I told you, not to care about it! Don't say it was me who spoiled it

Re: 1/72 German armoured infantry

Most of those problems sound like they can be worked around....except maybe for the bread bag. Thanks

Re: 1/72 German armoured infantry

No problem. I saved a bunch of the links from the original MH so if you have others you are looking for I might have saved them. At the very least I figure I can pad my post numbers by reposting them .

Re: 1/72 German armoured infantry

I have painted this set. Here are a few tips ( not in any particular order ) :
  • use a good pair of model clippers to trim off all the sprue and leave the figures sitting on the base sprue which is attached to the bases.
  • this leaves the figures upright and proud of the horizontal crossmember which supports each figure ( i.e. only attached to by the sprue under the figure.
  • it may seem like a lot of hassle, but the figures may then be painted with ease.
  • when you wish to leave off for drying, just lean the remaining sprue and figure set against a cardbord ( pasteboard ) box.
  • wash the figures on the sprue with detergent before you paint for best adhesion
  • use the 3 different sets of 16 for different camo schemes ( except those in greatcoats ) i.e. winter snow ; 3 colour ambush ; 1 colour /3 colour green.
  • some of the figures are ' inspired by the old Esci/now Italieri set of Germans ( WW2 ), so the poses of the mortar man and the MG on the wooden crate guy are a bit silly, but with a little care you can remove the mortar man from his base and rebase him, and the machinegunner, on 4mm plasticard and create your own base using PVA and grass scatter ( the coloured sawdust they use on railway dioramas )
  • mix these figures with the 2 Waffen SS sets from Pegasus and you can create a varied and interesting combat group of Germans of the 1943-45 period
  • BE WARNED! If you embark on modelling the Pegasus sets, you could be in for a long winter. The bases ( where they exist ) are poor. I rebased the whole lot on 4 mm plasicard and they look spectacular but I had to square of the card first then carve each base and finally sand each base. You can save on the sanding by covering the base with PVA and the ubiquitous green sawdust. You need superglue to bond the figures to the base first, so be careful!
Good luck! MoMo
