Looking for a Sherman...What do you suggest?

OK...I've resisted as long as I can and am looking to pick up a few armor pieces!

Now, I would like to have a 1/72 Sherman, in US markings, specifically one that took part during D-Day and one during the Bulge. What do you suggest? Is one manufacturer better than another?

Thanks in advance for your input! My wife thanks you as well....not really, I haven't told her that the collection is about to expand.

Re: Looking for a Sherman...What do you suggest?

For a Sherman that fought at Normandy, I recommend "Derby" (#60258) which is an M4A1 with the cast hull. I have it and I love it.

Dragon Diecast 1/72 Armor, 60258 United States M4A1

I think the closet thing you're going to get to a Sherman that fought during the Battle of the Bulge is "Phantom" (60164), which is an M4A3(76)w. I don't have it, but it looks good:

Dragon Diecast 1/72 Armor, 60164 United States M4A3 (76)

Thanks for the info. How does the Dragon Sherman compare to the Corgi or HM Shermans? Other than them being different scales.

The details are intricate. The weathering is often subtle but effective. The Dragon Armor Shermans are often said to be one of their finest products. I don't have any Corgi or HM to compare them with, but they are clearly superior to my Forces of Valor M4A1.

Buy the Dragon Sherman that looks like this:

Re: Looking for a Sherman...What do you suggest?

Dragon Shermans are the bees knees. Not exactly “diecast” but I couldn’t recommend them more. I’d definitely suggest you score some Dragon M4s.

And the ones linked above are the ones I’d recommend as well. Both Derby and the Phantom Div vehicles are good representations of the models in use during the campaigns you mentioned. Both are great products.

For variety here’s a few more for you to consider. A vehicle in use during the Normandy breakout is another 2nd Armor Div vehicle, Elowee. As for the Bulge, there’s also Cool Studs, Inc (the first Dragon Armor Sherman) or if you want something whitewashed there’s this assault gun belonging to the 6th AD. M4A3E8s like this one also saw their first combat in the Bulge. (Not sure about the glacis applique armor for this period though.) I believe Abrams still used his VVSS "Thunderbolt VI" throughout the campaign...Which Dragon doesn't make but I wished they did...But I'd ABSOLUTELY pick up Thunderbolt VII as well anyway. The "original Abrams Tank", and one of my favorites.

I like the one with the rockets on the side of the turret. Still waiting for Dragon's Sherman from the 1982 movie TANK with James Gardner. Hope the 19 year old cutie that played the bar call girl comes with it too.

Buy the Dragon Sherman that looks like this:

This Thunderbolt didn't serve in the Bulge. Abe rode a standard M4A3 76mm during the Ardennes Offensive.

Re: Looking for a Sherman...What do you suggest?

I say get the larger Corgi tanks. I prefer the larger scale without a doubt. I don't know about the details but the impression is much better.
