Dragon Announcement for August - 1/72 Russian T-34/76 Mod.1942

T-34/76 Mod.1942 Casting Turret, Unidentified Unit, Leningrad Front 1943, DRR 60214

Looks like the twin of DRR60208, but "it has a sand-colored camouflage overspray pattern that makes the model stand out."

Yes, it looks like this is the second repaint of their upcoming T-34 obr 1942 (according to Soviet designations) with a ChTZ turret, and both camouflage schemes are really nice. I'll buy at least one of these for sure.

Any expert with good references would dare assign a unit/month to these two tanks? Maybe a Russian member or visitor?

Dragon not always does it right. Their SdKfz 251/7 in grey (60276) is labelled "Barbarossa", when the original picture captions I've seen say it was photographed in the Netherlands; their recent SdKfz 251/2 (60281) is labelled "unidentified unit, Eastern front", when it is in fact a 21st Panzer Division vehicle (the model itself exhibits a 21st division marking!!) in Tunisia - there's a photograph of this or a very similar vehicle (in fact a 251/1 rather than 251/2) in SSP's "in action" booklet on the SdKfz 251, and the legend states it was Von Arnim's personal halftrack.

chascbv, would you be able to post the photograph of the actual vehicle after which the 60281 was modeled. I've been trying to find more info on Dragon's tanks as well. Sometimes they're really vague in their descriptions.

I've been trying to find more info on Dragon's tanks as well. Sometimes they're really vague in their descriptions.

Dragon is basing most of its models on illustartions from Concord books. For reasons unknown to me, Concord books have excellent photos and illustrations, but the captions are hit and miss, especially in books dedicated to the Eastern Front warfare. BTW, I've checked all my T-34 books as well as those dealing with armored warfare on the Eastern Front, but couldn't find this particular tank.

That being said, I hope Dragon will use this mold to make a model of Emile Zeebold (sp?) "Das Reich" T-34 tank ace, who is credited with 69 kills using this particular model of T-34.

Reagrds,

Sergey

Sure, DirtyACE, here it is (sorry for the poor quality - I had to avoid the flash on the shiny paper, and this is the first time I take a picture of a printed photograph on a book!)

Thank you chascbv! This is pretty helpful. Should we even bother letting Dragon know about these sort of mistakes. This is a pretty obvious one. They need to do better research, which is not that hard, especially for Dragon since they have more resources.

Thanks again chascbv

I fully agree with you, DirtyACE!

Also, thanks a lot, Berkut76, for trying to document this T-34. I think I'll go for the other ChTZ, which also has a beautiful paint job and maybe will be easier to identify or adscribe with some degree of certainty (I like to have unit/location data about the models I have; that really makes a difference for me!).
