Re: Today's Dragons in the U.K.

ps :

some of the new modern stuff was in as well, but I got distracted and ignored it!

Also, in the Wonderland shop they only had ONE Hanomag 251 left! Only one example of the 251, Bohemia. They've sold hundreds of the 5 or 6 types which have appeared up to this point!

The Sturmtiger with the inevitable coating of Zimmerit was on the shelves too. I ignored that one as well! I didn't like the fuzzy finish to the upper- works!

No sign of Easy Models 128 mm SPG!

Re: Today's Dragons in the U.K.

Hi, Dragonheads,

Off to visiy my chums at the jolly old " Treasure Bunker " today to see if they had anything new.

They had!

At last, I was able to pick up one of the versions of the Pioneer Wagon 251 C. ( 60276 ), Barbarossa, 1941. A neat little model which I examined closely to see if they had used any of the photo-etched parts to detail the interior. Alas, no. The tool bins which replace the two rear benches appear to be plastic and not metal!

Cheatsie wheatsies!

The decals, though, are excellent for the critically small numbers on the vehicles.

The overall finish on the five I examined was poorer than usual. Thinly painted in Panzer grey, two out of five models were displaying distinct brushmarks on the hoods of the vehicles which is unusual because the paint jobs are usually executed by very professional air-brush artists!

Also, I noticed that the track joint was to the bottom, rear of the track run. This is unusual too, because they tend to put it to the top of the track run to keep it out of sight.

Still, I got the best one and added it to my collection. Another 251, only another 385 to go!

Next, a trip round the corner to Jaimison's. They had one Jagdpanzer lV L/70 Command vehicle ( Western Front, 1945, 60240 ) with a Crow's Foot antenna! I had sworn not to buy any more of Guderian's Ugly Ducklings, but I relented when I thought about how good the camo scheme was and how my collection had missed out on the other command versions.

I relented and bought! Not many of these about and they will not be with us for long.

The other potential purchase today was the T34/85 with German Markings.
I decided that I had enough " Captured " T34s and Shermans, and would resist this one, even though it looked really neat when I examined it up close.

Well, that's all folks!

No sign of the Polish M4A4 but still plenty of the French version about.

Re: Today's Dragons in the U.K.

Nothing much to report as new. I almost bought one of these, despite the fact that I mainly collect armour and some planes pre-1950. I was most impressed with the ERA version of the Bradley :

I'm still looking for one of these :

Can't seem to find this Polish Sherman anywhere here.

I think that I may check out the action in Edinburgh sometime soon. There is always something new at the shop there.

Happy Hunting,

That ERA Bradley is indeed very impressive - I saw it the other day and am still wondering whether I should buy it as it is one of Dragon's best efforts .

Re: Today's Dragons in the U.K.

I agree with Cardinal that the Bradleys with ERA might well end up being considered to be among the finest of Dragon's efforts.

The sand camo version is the M2A2 BRADLEY w/ERA 2nd Battalion, 7th Regt. 3rd Inf. Div BAGHDAD 2004, and it is very nice indeed. I saw one in one of the shops which I haunt, and it is more impressive in the flesh. The pics don't really do justice to the level of detail packed into this beautiful model.

However, what about this one which I haven't spotted yet! It is catalogued as " DR60287, M2 A2 Bradley with ERA, 1st Battalion,18th Infantry Regt.1st Infantry Div. TIKRIT 2004 " . It too is finished to the same high spec. I think that it beats the Baghdad version because of the three colour camo + the reactive armour in sand. This rendering really shows off the extra reactive armour to effect. What do you think? :

Question Re: Today's Dragons in the U.K.

What exactly is the difference between the Hornisse and the Nashorn?

Re: Today's Dragons in the U.K.

Dear ZS Van, Man,

The Hornise is the early version of the Nashorn. Hitler didn't like the name, so it was changed.

The main points of dif. between the two variants appear to be :
  • the gun clamp differs between models
  • the Hornisse has what appears to be a breach-block rest which clutters the fighting compartment
  • probably there are small differences in the internal layout, but we need more expert opinion on that one.
Apart from these obvious differences between types, nothing else is obvious to me.

Come on you guys with the thick Ref. books, what else is different. ZS wants to sleep at night without trying to figure it out.

OOPS! Also, I forgot, the drive wheels differ and the return sprocket/wheel on the Hornisse is set lower, I believe.

Re: Today's Dragons in the U.K.

Hornisse : note the arms which stick out either side of the fighting compartment! What are they?

Nashorn : note ring behind the gun guard.

Nashorn : note the different drive sprockets to both the Hornisse and the other Nashorn ( bang goes that theory! )
