I don't seem to understand this Sherman release

Ok, what I don't understand is the description of the tank. I think there may be a mistake. It says that there's a slogan on the tank's hull that says "Velikye Luki". Now, I know that that is Russian, however, it says that the tank served in France with the British Northamptonshire Yeomanry. I'm confused

Re: I don't seem to understand this Sherman release

"Velikye Luki" is thought by some to be the name of the tank commanded by Sgt. Gordon which killed Wittmann. As has been mentioned before, controversy and debate surround this event.

Thanks panzercommander, but I'm not referring to the controversy just to the slogan on the tank. Why is it Russian? Or am I missing something here?

Who knows why young men do what they do in war. Maybe a crewmember was of Russian heritage or just random.

Reminds me of a picture I once saw of a knocked out Cromwell in Villers-Bocage that says "Shufti Cush" on the turret, which according to the caption is arabic for "let me see your pu$$y".

Hahaha... yes, you're right. It's a good looking model, I was just curious.

Re: I don't seem to understand this Sherman release

Hi..i'm a new user from Italy (my nick refers to general Annibale Bergonzoli "Barba Elettrica" (Electric Whiskers)..i found this forum by chance and i'd like to contribute to the discussion..In the volume Sherman VS Tiger by Stephen Hart there is the answer to your questions..Velikye Luki is the tank who many presume being the killer of the late ace Michael Wittmann..the name on the tank is due to a particular tradition of the A Squadron of the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry ..other tanks bore the names Orenburg, Odessa , Brest-Litovsk, Briansk, Kusrk..so the link is that all are soviet towns..other squadrons of the same regiment bore the name of U.S. States (B Squadron) and Northamptonshire villages (C Squadron)..
