| Re: Couple of Tropical Bf 109Gs
I remember seeing the crash photos in The Aeroplane and FlyPast, what a shame.

| Re: Couple of Tropical Bf 109Gs It was sad to lose Black 6 off the airshow cicuit. The MOD had given permission for it to fly for two more years just prior to its crash. The crash was caused by that age old problem, to little hours on type. I spoke to a couple of pilots at Duxford about the crash, one of them had flown Black 6. They said that much the same as Hornchurch. The cause of the crash was pilot error on landing. The pilot misjudged his approach and decided to go round again, he pushed the throttle straight to max, You just dont do that with the DB engine, a steady increase of power is the correct way. The result of his action was to choke the engine which caused a loss of power. He was very lucky to survive almost unscathed, sadly the same could not be said for the aircraft. I rated Black 6 as probably the best ever rebuild of any warbird in the world, ever. It took a total of 20 years to complete. I was told by the Black 6 team that the aircraft was almost 80% original, that figure is about as good as it gets in the warbird world. | |||||||||||||

| Re: Couple of Tropical Bf 109Gs Interesting post, Jim. I know she was captured by Australian soldiers in the 8th Army, after she was abandoned at an advanced landing ground. The Australian-commander was enraged when he was ORDERED to hand her over to the British !!!!!!!!! (don't blame him). Reg Hallam 1st flew her again in 1991 = he is SUCH a skillful pilot; as she hit a 'divet' on take off & although she slewed-sideways slightly (most pilots would probably have crashed !!!!!), he took corrective action (after the unexpected 'detour')...& she climbed away safely. I was lucky enough to see the (rough-looking) 1st-post-restoration flight footage. I've attached a few pix I took of her, on a visit to Duxford, in blistering heat, a few months before 'the' accident. On the day I took these photo's, she was due to fly to Jersey, but a leaking-tank put paid to that flight. | |||||||||||||

Yeah, too right !!!!!!!! That Daimler-Benz engine sounds superb........ The colour scheme on Black 6 really makes that particular '109 look SO attractive If this model was in a larger-scale, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it !!!!!!!!!!
