Re: Done with Dragon

I seem to be the exception here. I like Dragons. I use white glue on the parts. I have the Big Beautiful Doll and several Fw 190D's and they have been sitting on their landing gear for months without any problem. I just got the Gabreski P-47 and also have the 5x5 P-47 and believe the detail on both to be fantastic. Isn't Dragon the only one who makes a 1:72 190D?

Re: Done with Dragon

I have several Dragon models and barring the canopy issue on 2 of them they are some quality models for the price. It sounds like you got a lemon.

Re: Done with Dragon

I agree that most Draggins won't just slap together. The landing gear on almost all of mine required a certain degree of filing and/or judicious (as in conservative) amounts of cyano. It doesn't bother me at all though, because the end product has always been well worth it. This way I can get the struts and doors or whatever, to angle exactly the way I want them to, not the way the manufacturer thinks they should be - which more often than not is usually wrong.

Re: Done with Dragon

I have to agree with Skunky, I just purchased my first P51 which was BBD, and compared next to my Corge BBD, theres no match to Dragons accuracy, and only a few minor problems that white glue can't handle. And by my picture I like Corgi's. Sorry, Skunky the cat had to come out of the pool...

Re: Done with Dragon

I have to agree with Skunky and LzyBns on this one. For me, Dragon's detailed moulds and markings more than make up for the slight annoyance of fiddly bits. I use a little bit of museum putty as needed to hold antennae / landing gear in place, and I haven't had any problems (knock on wood). Also -- and I know I'm in the minority here -- I appreciate the fact that they don't come with pilot figures. I prefer Dragon's more detailed cockpits, and most 1:72 pilot figures just look like lumps of plastic, anyway.

My one complaint: I wish Dragon's planes came with propellers already on, just so it would be easier to repackage them. I cringe when I think about moving my Dragon WWII Navy contingent -- F4F, F6F, F4U -- from my office, or *shudder* moving my entire collection. (I do keep all boxes and packing materials; any advice / suggestions on successfully carrying out this evolution would be appreciated.)

All the above having been said, I have been purchasing mostly Corgis of late -- the Hound has taken the lead in innovative offerings. I never thought I'd need a Fairey Swordfish, but the one I have now has pride of place in my small collection.

Re: Done with Dragon

Hey folks,
I have to side with the Dragon folks. I like their planes. Yes, the fiddly bits can be annoying, and if you don't have a case or need to rotate your models due to a lack of space, there is a lot of work getting the Dragons set up and put away. (Relative to Corgi or Gemini.)

However, on the plus side, when Dragon gets it right, boy do they get done right. The details and workmanship is wonderful.

As with anything, it is a trade off. If you've got the time and the display room, get a Dragon. If your time and space are limited, avoid the Dragons as the parts can fall off and get lost in the carpet.

Re: Done with Dragon

I should probably reevaluate my position regarding Dragon airplanes. My initial posting was done while still sulking about the poor condition of my Dallas Blond P-47 (I REALLY wanted that model).

I should say that I doubt I will ever again buy a Dragon razorback P-47 as they seem to be quite troublesome. The bubble-tops, of which I have 3, are wonderful.

I would also not purchase any of their Ju-87s. I bought the first and it went together in a rickity fashion than bespoke poor design more than anything else (having to glue the wheel spats on? Puhleese!).

So those are the only two Dragon model types that I have sworn off (after swearing at!

When the fire-breather gets it right the models are things of beauty. But when the fire-breather turns into a mouth-breather, well, it gets ugly real fast.

Re: Done with Dragon

Actually what I tried what super glue at the base and then model cement with a toothpick to fill in the gaps...no luck

Using cement to fill a gap is a non-starter. Modeling putty is the way to go, but you'll have to touch up the paint.

Re: Done with Dragon

Of course I agree with most of you about poor quality of pieces you have to add on your Dragon models. Bad fitting, fragile, etc...
I agree too for the quality of their moulds and the details they put on their models (IMHO the best in the 1/72 scale) !!
We have to accept the Dragon's lotery who gave us once a great model, perfect with good strong pieces, no problem to put them on the model, flaps who stay in place... yes, yes, I have got one or two like that (or maybe I've heard that this kind of Dragon models exists... ) and once (most of time) , an aircraft who needs lot of work, patience, time, cutter, other stuffs you find to solve the problem of the diecast and our pal the cyano glu to get a nice model !!
So please Mr. Dragon, give us some nice models with a better QC !!!

Re: Done with Dragon

I bought the Korean War P-51 today and fit on the parts is so bad the landing gear wont even stay on with super glue! Every Dragon I have has at least 3-4 places that I've had to glue on parts. They're all nice looking models but I'm tired of the frustration..

I share your pain man. Mine was with their F-14B.
Perhaps you could send me your troubling P-51. I'll see to it that it won't bother you again
