Re: Dragon P51D Mustangs

What about Yeagers' Mustang?

What about it? Seriously, it's a nice one too and I'm glad I grabbed it when it came out a few years back.

Re: Dragon P51D Mustangs

I have the blue E2-S. I understand there is some question as to whether the 361st ever actually painted their Mustangs blue...anyone have any info on this? The best I could do was www.littlefriends.co.uk. Some information there, but no definitive yes or no answer.

Re: Dragon P51D Mustangs

There was an explanation for the blue color on the old forum. The guy who owns that Mustang (air show bird) wanted to paint it like the green one, but only had black and white photos. When they checked the government records to see what paint color it should be, the records listed the color # as whatever olive drab was back in the 40's, but the # had since changed to mean the color of blue. Since it was a black and white photo, how were they to know? The Dragon releases have the green one for the actual fighter, and the blue one for it's air show cousin.
I know it sounds a bit far fetched, but I think that's the jist of it.

Re: Dragon P51D Mustangs

The actual aircraft was olive drab, however at altitude it looked blue. An optical illusion of sorts.

flyXwire no-one had yet mentioned Yeager's plane. I would have thought it more popular.

Re: Dragon P51D Mustangs

Waaaay back in the early 70's is about when the argument started. A series of articles was written about it too. At the time only black and white photos were known to exist of the planes in question. There was speculation that some 56th FG planes were being painted with some blue shades. It was then thought that the 361st also started to use blue to paint the upper surfaces. The argument went back and forth.

THEN this photo surfaced and setteled the whole thing....................

Re: Dragon P51D Mustangs

The webmaster of littlefriends.co.uk has interviewed several crewchiefs who served in the 361st. They all emphatically deny that blue paint was ever used.

Re: Dragon P51D Mustangs

You know i have seen many pictures of the 361st P-51 Mustangs and alot of them were all silver with just a yellow nose too.
I have not seen one Blue one... other then the airshow Mustang that flys around the country.
Everything else points to the OD.
