Question Re: IXOs Beaufighter Goes Australian

Nice, do my eyes deceive me or didn't you move those rockets away from the prop arcs?

Re: IXOs Beaufighter Goes Australian

Thanks, ZS. On this troublesome IXO model, I had to repair a broken tailplane, get rid of those huge gaps at the upper wing roots and fashion a loop antenna to go behind the cockpit out of tubing and wire. Fortunately, this particular plane didn't have a cover for the loop antenna, as most Aussie Beaufighters did, so I could display it out in the open, as it were, with some degree of accuracy. I started to pry off the rockets to move them outward a bit, however the base piece on one side started to crack, so I decided to leave them as is. Despite all of the problems, including rough edges to the basic metal casting and ill-fitting add-on parts, the repaint turned out fairly well.

Re: IXOs Beaufighter Goes Australian

This one really impresses me Epapazian.

I think you have done a very nice piece of work there, just a touch of weathering makes all the difference and now no one would ever know it was an IXO, looks excellent to me.
What better than to do an Aussie Beau.
Great stuff.

Thanks, Jim. I have been gradually toning down my weathering, even to the point of re-weathering old resin and diecast paint jobs. And you are right, a bit here, a bit there, with particular attention to air current effects, is much more realistic than the heavy- handed , near uniform darkening of all panel lines.

Re: IXOs Beaufighter Goes Australian

I fully agree with you Epapazian however having the skill to do it is a different matter, you seem to mastered the art just perfectly.

You have me fired up to have a try this winter at a few projects.

At the moment i am finally biting the bullet as they say and building a den in the loft.
This is a major job and the accumulation of dust since the house was built in 1885 is dreadful, old birds nests and rubbish everywhere including a newspaper from 1885 !
However when the project is finished I hope to have a nice work room where I can play around with repaints and try a few kit builds.
Ju 86 will be the first, I have had this kit for 30 years or so and never got round to making it.
AND I blame all this on the members here like you Epapazian for wetting my appetite again for model building.

As you probably know, Jim, this is why I post so many pictures of my humble repaint and detailing efforts. I'm trying to get others to try their hand at something beyond merely collecting and displaying diecast models as they come out of the box. I'm not knocking that, however, I have found my evolution as a "hands on' collector to be most satisfying and my hat's off to anyone else who goes the same route. So good luck on your JU-86 project, Jim. BTW, are you considering a Spanish Civil War version or a more standard Luftwaffe pre-war scheme?

Re: IXOs Beaufighter Goes Australian

Great repaint Epapazian, absolutely love it.

One good thing about IXO's painted on panel lines is that they only require paint to remove them. The way you have painted and weathered this Beaufighter would have me only guessing what the scale was, there is no tell-tale over the top panel lining to compare it to.

I believe you have just given IXO's Beau's a 2nd lease of life

Not trying to hijack this thread, but: Jim, that old newspaper can help transport you back to the day that ol' England was in her glory, and was actually owned and run by and for ENGLISHMAN!
