New Decals

I just got a great deal on a P-38 from one of our members, but the star and bar decals are upside down on the fuselage. ( I knew about this before I purchased the plane ).

I am thinking I can probably find some new decals that I can put over the upside down ones, and was wondering if anyone has ever done this, and the results. My main concern would be the original decal which is pad printed might bleed through the newer waterbased slide on decals.

Thanks for your suggestions and advice.

I'm not recommending this, but I used two decals, one on top of the other, when fixing a similar error on a model a while back. So far, no show through. I have found that using nail remover or other solvents on pad printed insignias is too risky. I have lost too much of the underlying paint each time I went this way.

Re: New Decals

If i'm right that upside down star & bar logo is a decal...You might try to do what i did one time...
I took clear tape pressed it hard on the decal and ripped it off...Then i cleaned it up with a little mail polish remover.
Then i put on another decal and it looks like new and can't tell i did it.
Enter at your own risk......Don't do this if you don't have a lot of experience in this sort of thing.

My FM Putt Putt Maru looks like it is all pad printed.

Hmmn, rather than risk what Epz' did (which takes loadsa skill) there are certain decals which are MUCH thinner than others.

From my time in I.P.M.S. circles, the general concensus of opinion was, that Aeromaster decals (in the sealable plastic bags) used to be rather thin........ whereas, if you can pick up an older Superscale/Microscale sheet (secondhand, at a kit fair, or, off of E-bay) packaged in the 'old cobalt-BLUE' envelopes.... they are much, much thicker & give better coverage (so, one SHOULD suffice).

Two of my mates who also concurred went on to build award-winning models, two of them featured in the Osprey Fw.190/German Fighters model-making book, by Geoff Coughlin (who also used Microscale/Superscale decals on his 'Shady-Lady' Nuthampstead-based Monogram 1/48th B.17).

Nowadays the divisions on who prints them is made worse.

But, if ya buy a decal-sheet (w/insignias) in the 'Blue' envelope(s), you won't go wrong.

Failing that, blag 'em out of a cheap plastic-kit
