Best body filler/putty????

During the late 50s and early 60s my brother and I customized plastic models using plastic aluminum as body filler/putty.

Nowadays, what is the preferred brand of body filler/putty?

(I would like to find a product that would be applicable to both plastic models as well as diecast models. If such a product is not available, then the best body filler/putty for plastic models)

Thanks for your help!

One of my IPMS mates swears by 'Squadron-Signal' White putty/body filler, which is made specifically for plastic kits.

I'd imagine it works well with die-cast, too ?

I have used both Model Master Red Putty and the Squadron White Putty for many years. Works great on plastic, but have never used either on metal.

It seems to me that any generic car autobody filler putty would be the obvious choice for metal, wouldn't it?

Re: Best body filler/putty????

Two-part Bondo works the best for me. For large areas, I use Bondo in a can (with the Mustang on it) and for smaller areas, I use the Bondo glazing putty from a tube. Both come with a tube of Bondo cream hardener. Bondo is also much cheaper than hobby modeling putty. The secret to using Bondo is to only use a tiny amount of cream hardener and to work quickly as Bondo sets up, and can be sanded, within a few minutes. If you use too much hardener, it will cure while your mixing it. I've also used Magic Sculpt, which is a two-part epoxy putty, but that takes about 4 hours to cure and I'm impatient. As far as Squadron green or white putty is concerned, I've found the best place to use those is in the garbage can.

I know a few collectors that have used Bondo for diecast (not plastic) and works really well for them...
After it's all done and painted you can't even tell it's there.
For the plastic models Squadron-Signal White putty/body filler works great too.

Re: Best body filler/putty????

I'm going to have to look into where I can find this Squadron stuff locally, as the last time I used model filler it was in a tube and made by Testors (1966!) and I have a project coming up that I will likely need it for. I need a local source for the 'Zap' line too if I can find it.

Modellers Choice should be able to fix you up when you are there on Saturday.

Re: Best body filler/putty????

I will try the two-part Bondo stuff that Skidmarks has suggested on my FM birds I'm planning to rework, then I'll post a report on how well the brand works.

Thumbs up Re: Best body filler/putty????

Funny you should mention that -- I've got a list of items I am going to be hitting them up for when I get there, outside of diecast. Skunky mentioned the Zap products. Apparently one is a gap filler and the other a slow-set product. Does MC carry that brand, as I was going to give that a try too? (Mind you, I suppose I could also look at Hornet Hobbies here in TO, but I will be at MC on Saturday.)
