418 Squadron (RCAF) Mosquito Repaint

I have almost finished this one, my first custom job, and my first experience with airbrushing anything. All I have left to do now is throw a coat or two of dull-cote on it. More than a few painful lessons were learned, but as soon as I can find some more decals to my liking and one of the pieces for my airbrush, I'd like to think I'll start on another one.

Corgi "Bangkok" Mossie: $15
Decals: $12
Airbrush and paint: $45
Future Floor wax: $7
The experience of doing this: Priceless
How much I will pay to assasinate certain business people if Corgi announces a 418 Sqn. Mosquito in next year's catalogue: Up for negotiation...

Hey Canucklehead - nice job! I think we talked about this one a while back - glad to see you got to it. There is something uniquely satisfying in creating your own repainted diecast model, isn't there! Look out, you're hooked now....

Still want to do a 418 Sqn. bird myself, probably with the black underside though. If you've read "Terror in the Starboard Seat" then you know the scheme I'm thinking of.

GREAT job, Canucklehead! It is, IMHO, a wonderful improvement over the Corgi "Bangkok" Mossie, which I really never cared for, even for the $15 price.
As to your take-off of the credit card ad, that, too, is "priceless," especially the last line!

Very nice work, who's decals did you use? They sat down nicely over the panel lines. Paintwork is very good too! The leading edges
of the wing which are usually a problem turned out great. Let me know when you're ready to do a Chinook in CAF markings!

Thanks for the kind words no4, I consider your work to be an inspiration and something to eventually aspire to.
As for the Sid Seid/Dave McIntosh Mossie, is that the one with the original 418 crest on the crew door and all the kill marks on the port side of the nose? That's the only one I can recall seeing pictures of, I think there was a dog somewhere in the pic. If you manage to find some decals let me know, I have two more Bangkok Mossies that I may become something else. Canmilair.com has the decals for "Black Rufe", but that's another grey/green one. Not much else is available for Canadian Mossies right now.

Thanks maple! (Might be going to Cold Lake this w/e to check out your namesake. Stay tuned!) The main markings are from "Mosquito Best Sellers Pt.1" by Eagle Strike Decals (available at Squadron.com) and the stencils are from Tally-Ho Decals. I used Micro Sol and Micro Set as recommended by the more experienced customizers here on the forum and it worked a dream. Skunky said not to touch it once it was in place, the fuselage roundel on the port side is evidence of why. There's a tiny bit of tearing that proves the wisdom of his words. I can pick out some problems with the paint as well, but for the most part it looks OK. I used Tamiya low-tack tape for the masking, ModelMaster paints through a cheap ass Aztek airbrush I picked up at Wal-Mart, and it turned out a decent job. Great for beginners like myself.

As for the Chinny, that may have to wait until I can lay hands on a cheap one. Next one I'm going to try is a Hornet. I've got the Dragon "Golden Dragons" that I want to turn into a CF-18 of some kind. Does anybody know the main differences between an F/A-18C and a CF-18? I know the light under the cockpit and the arrestor hook, is there anything else I'll have to work around? I love the planes, but the tech-y type stuff eludes me alot of the time. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks JP. It took about ten hours over about three months I'd say. A lot of waiting, like I'd spray on a coat of paint one night in 10 minutes and not get around to doing another coat for a couple of days. Then I wouldn't touch it for a few weeks. The longest I worked on it in one stretch was about three hours doing all the decals. I didn't try to rush it, that might be why it turned out as well as it did. Actually, I did rush it at one point and broke the prop pins, that's probably what simmered me down more than anything.

Thanks for your kind words as well Cap'n Ed and djjeff. Glad y'all like it!

Thanks very much Canuckle. Yes, that's the Mossie. I've made custom decals of the 418 Sqn door crest, but as for the mixed black and white swazi kill marks I'll probably source them from an existing decal set. Problem is the job is about # 10 on my list of mods and repaints so it won't be done anytime soon!
