Tampo print decal repair?

I was looking through my collection last night deciding on which ones I could rid of when I spotted the first Gemini P-51 release, "Bald Eagle". The only time I remember looking at it before was when I pried off the canopy to have a better look at the pilot late last year sometime, for the "Fat Pilots" thread whenever that was. If I saw what I did last night back then I must have blocked it from my memory for some reason. Anyhoo, I sent in the troops to have a closer look...

So, are the clones right? Is masking it off, then using acetone to clean it up, then finally using white paint to touch it up the best way to go? If I had been paying attention, or had cared enough when I first got it I could have sent it back, but that's six months ago now, so too late in my books. It's more fun to try and fix this kind of crap anyways. So, what's the best way to fix it? Opinion are greatly appreciated.

Re: Tampo print decal repair?

I would mask off the blue, one white field at a time, and then polish the blue "shadow" using toothpaste. A wooden toothpick might be a useful tool. Acetone sounds to aggressive to me

Re: Tampo print decal repair?

I liked the troops you had in there
I don't think i would use the tape because a little bit of thinner may still creap inside and make a bigger mess
than it already is.
I use a Q-tip with very little thinner and lightly touch it up as much as you can.
Use a very fine paint brush for the star area with very little thinner as well.
This is the sort thing i had to do with the Oh-7 B-25 of Corgi and it turned out way better then Corgi had it..The green gunk on there before looked like it hit a sewer plant.
Good luck.

Sorry, I don't have any good suggestions to offer you, but JP seems to have the right suggestions for fixing your particular problem, imho.

Toothpaste, eh? I never would have thought of that, I'll try that first. Now that you mention it acetone may be a bit over the top, but you know those clones, they'll use an atom bomb when they could've used a flyswatter.

If the toothpaste trick doesn't work out I'll give this a go. I've got some disposable fine work kind of brush dealies that may do the trick.

Yeah I got 42 of the little buggers now with more on the way. I'll say this for them though, they're a lot easier to display than die-cast.

Thanks for the advice and the kind words, gentlemen. Off to work!

Re: Tampo print decal repair?

I wasn't too keen on using any kind of nail polish remover, as it meant I would more than likely have to do some touch up painting afterwards. I tried the toothpaste first, as I said I would, but there was little to no effect on the smudges. I then tried some airbrush thinner and after a bit of work, a fair bit of the smudges came off. I then tried the toothpaste again and lo and behold things looked even better! I sent the lads in to have another look see...

It took about 10 minutes from start to finish, so not too bad. Instead of Q-tips as suggested, I used some Microbrush applicators so I could keep the damage small if there was going to be any. They cost me $2 for a pack of 10 at my local hobby stores. A pretty neat little product!

Thanks for all your help fellas!

ROFL! Oh Canucklehead, that's the most unexpectedly funny thing I've seen in a long time! Congrats on getting the smudges off, too!
