Best way to "touch-up" diecast paint jobs?

In repainting the rockets on my Witty Sea Fury (see thread this topic) I encountered a problem with the application of enamel model paint adhering to the existing paint on the model. I used the paint I have on hand which is, admittedly, for plastic models or for models that have a primer coat. Although it took some effort the results on the Sea Fury turned-out nicely. But there has to be a better way.

Anyone have suggestions as to the best way to paint small or intricate parts on an already painted die cast model? I would especially like to correct the IXO models I have but don't want to botch the job.

Thanks!

This is not an easy thing to do, especially if it's some sort of camo scheme. I would suggest masking around the damage at the closest panel lines then sanding. I couldn't tell you what colors to use.

Hi Black 6,

On the paint adhesion issue, it could be that there is a release agent on the parts that prevent the paint from holding. This is a very fine film that lines a mold to keep the molded part from sticking, and is why most model kit instructions tell you to wash your parts before assembly and painting. I'd recommend giving the parts a wash in lukewarm water with a little dish detergent, then a good rinse.

I have found it best to usually let it be. Your touch-up ends up being a bigger eye sore than whatever you were trying to cover in the first place. Unless its white or black its near impossible to match paint.

I will say however that I have had good success with a Mr Clean Magic Eraser in getting smudges and things off without damaging the paint, including scratches off of canopies.

Re: Best way to "touch-up" diecast paint jobs?

Thanks guys for helping me out on this.

I wasn't intending to do major work such as repainting the fuselage / wings my "skills" are quite limited (especially compared to the work some of our members do with, seemingly, great ease). I was intent on correcting some of the detail work, or lack of, in regard to wheel struts, wheel wells, armament, etc., that you find on models by IXO and Witty. For example, the rockets on my Witty Sea fury were the same color as the underside of the plane (including wheel struts/wells). On the IXO models almost everything will be the same color as the base color of the plane (blue machine guns, wheels etc). See what I mean? Those are the kinds of things I would like to correct.

So far I have only repainted the rockets on my Sea Fury which is how I found the problem with the paint not adhering very well. The repaint was well worth the trouble as it made the model MUCH nicer and more realistic. However, I haven't tried anything else until I could learn a better way to make the paint "stick" so to speak. I think No4 has made a good point that it might be a residue from the molding process. But wouldn't the manufacturer encounter the same problem when they painted it? I'll give the area I hope to paint a little detail wash to see if that does the job.

Thanks for that tidbit about the Mr Clean Eraser PanzerC - my wife has some of that and I will try it out.

Thanks again, and if anyone else has a suggestion I would love to hear it too.

For small areas and rockets etc. I use Sharpies. They come in lots of colours now. Fine point for reaching those hard to get at places.

you will probably get better results by using acrylic paint rather than enamel.

Definitely Acrylics.........watered down 1 part water to 3 parts paint. Also use a good modelling brush and lots of patience!!
