Possible commission

Okay I don't even know if this is feasable, but has anybody here ever tried to build a 1/72 scale version of the USS Kitty Hawk? How big wold something like that be? How much would it cost? It's just I'm going to open these two Century VF-154 Tomcats, and I was wondering how they would look on a Carrier Diorama with the appropriate dimensions.

Re: Possible commission

A 1/72 scale USS Kitty Hawk would work out to be about 14 and a half feet long wouldn't it? That's a bit on the large side, even for the most enthusiastic collector or model builder.

Canucklehead is pretty close to spec on the size (I swear your avatar looks like one of the characters from the BBC productions of the Sharpe series, Canucklehead). You would probably be better server mocking up bases which appear to be sections of the carrier deck.

Re: Possible commission

I figured as much. With 10 inch planes I had assumed that this carrier would be about 11 ft in length. So I don't expect someone to commission one of these for me and I'm certialnly not talented enough to build something like that. Still...it'd be interesting to see.

So I guess I'm photoshopping this one

Re: Possible commission

I've seen something like it done here in Germany. At a model show a few years ago, this model-building club displayed a 1/72 scale WW II Essex class carrier with all the airplanes on it. Granted, that's a bit smaller than a modern super-carrier, but it was still huge (something over 10 ft).

It was a combined effort of many modelers, though. I wish I had pictures. I'll try to find some, as I'm still in touch with a guy who, though not a member of that club, knew them very well.

If its that big you could sit in the back and play admiral! How about fitting remote control and then putting rc aircraft on the flight deck. The possibilities are endless.

It sounds like a lot of fun (very very expensive fun).

I forgot to mention, (and some of the Brits on the forum may be familiar with this) At a holiday resort by the sea called Scarborough there is a lake in the local park. Twice daily during the summer months large scale model ships were used to depict the Battle of the River Plate. Each was a copy of one of the ships that took part in the battle.
Hidden inside each ship was a man to operate it. I cannot remember the size of the ships but they were at least between 12 and 20 feet long.
Each of these ships had guns that fired blanks along with lots of noise and smoke. To a small boy these ships looked very real and the whole battle was narrated over the loudspeakers around the Lake.

All exciting stuff, AND THEN! yes the PC brigade arrived and said you can't do that it might offend people and it sets a bad example for the children !!!
The last time the show was put on it had been changed into some sort of comedy routine. Needless to say the the last I heard of the show was that it had folded.
I am not surprised. Rightly so, we should not be so low as to teach children about war, after all the world is a safe place and we are not under threat any more.

God Bless America.

Re: Possible commission

At the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola FL, there is a display of a 1/72 USS Enterprise (CV6). The entire airwing is visible, as are a ton of crewmen. I spent about an hour just walking around it, admiring the work.

It IS huge.

This was featured in the magazine Fine Scale Modeler issue and I remember reading about it years ago. That was one impressive aircraft carrier built in 1:72nd scale!

Re: Possible commission

If you want large how about the one-tenth scale 86.28 foot long model of the battleship Yamato located at the Kure Maritime Museum (Yamato Museum) in, Kure City, Japan.

In addition to the Yamato model they also have an Zero fighter Type 62 and a human torpedo on display.

Wow, that is beautiful!!! such amazing attention to detail! There must be over a half a million dollars worth of materials vested in that carrier.
