Weathering Diecast

A lot of the time when I look at my die-cast models, they seem to have too much of a "factory show-room" fresh look about them for working, combat aircraft. With that in mind, I decided to try to "weather" one of them, and chose the Corgi Dickfield FW-190. I'm not sure exactly how dirty an aircraft in the desert theater would have looked, but I gave it a try. .In a nutshell, I inked in the panel lines, applied a wash overall, and airbrushed on smoke color for the exhaust stains. Here are the results:

Re: Weathering Diecast

That looks great flyboy, I like the result. If I can offer one suggestion it would be to ink in the canopy rail line too. Not a fault on your part, it's Corgi's, and is the only thing I dislike about their FW190 casting - they don't give the canopy the proper separation which defines the plane's profile. I've done it and it did help.

On the subject of weathering, I generally don't mind the clean look, but I wish Corgi would do more weathered models, cause when done well they look fantastic. My favorite example is the Bunker Hill Corsair AA33005. Another great one is the 330 Sqn Sunderland.

So I've done a few weathering jobs as well, using a few Legend models since an extra can be had for cheap, and if you screw up it's no big loss, at least compared to an AA model. It is fun, isn't it?!

The first is the JG27 Bf109E, too clean in it's original form...

Second is the Brian Lane Spitfire, which as a Battle of Britain veteran begged for that war-weary look.... (see original here)

Re: Weathering Diecast

All right No4mkit,

I'll see your 2 Legends projects, and raise you an AA Bomber. Here is basically the same treatment done to a Corgi HE-111. Since it was also a desert scheme - I thought the same color washes, etc., would work well on it. Again, I wanted it to be subtle, but not look squeaky clean. .. . .

Re: Weathering Diecast

I just got the Lane Spitfire, and I love it. The weathering is perfect on it. Thanks again Waltz.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

I like it! You know, Corgi might better issue all the desert schemes in weathered form, they might find a more receptive audience.

Ok, so I do the odd AA too Flyboy, so I'll toss in a subtly weathered Mossie....
