New collector with basic questions for starting this hobby

I'm hoping someone can help answer some questions I have for starting a collection.

I know nothing about Corgi and their different scales of aircraft and ground vehicles, but I already have a few corgi jets from when I was growing up. They are all different sizes. I am wondering how to determine the scale of the model by looking at them because I didn't keep the boxes, and there are no military models in my local stores.

Could someone also fill me in on the different collections and scales Corgi makes for military planes and ground vehicles? I want to start a collection with both ground and airplanes and would like to try and keep them all the same scale, or at least have all my planes the same scales and the vehicles the same size with other ground pounders. Which scales have the most variety of different models, and what are the pros and cons to collecting a certain scale; other than space for storing/displaying. I.E the smallest Corgi model I have is a f14 tomcat, which doesn't have any ordinence, or much detailing on the bottom. I want to get a nice balance of size and detailing with a ton of different models in the same scale.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: New collector with basic questions for starting this hobby

They make 1:144, 1:72, 1:48. They have in the past, and perhaps will in the future, make 1:32. The most planes and liveries are available in 1:72. For a lot of folks, 1:72 is the best compromise for detail vs space used. Also, 1:72 is generally cheaper than larger scales. I'm sure others will offer very good points to consider also.

Ps. this is for aircraft, I dont collect vehicles, though I know they make them in 1:50 scale

The most popular and largest range for Corgi aircraft is 1/72. Their armor as previously mentioned is 1/50.
For aircraft check out http://www.tricatus.co.uk/ the Unofficial Corgi Aviation Archive. This is a great site for Corgi information.

Re: New collector with basic questions for starting this hobby

Popeye,

Welcome to the group. I only had a few Corgi when I joined 5 months ago, but since then I have added Hobby Master, IXO, Carousel, Forces of Valor, GMP, Witty Wings, and Dragon. As you begin to add to your collection, you will find that some manufacturers offer some die cast that others do not, and that you will prefer one manufacturer's model over another.

Just keep an open mind and use this forum to ask any questions you have. There is a wealth of information here, and everyone is willing to help.

Re: New collector with basic questions for starting this hobby

Thanks guys, I'm planning on starting out with Corgi because that's the brand I know and then to branch out to the other companies as I become more familiar with collecting. How long are the wingspans for the 1:72 models; can we use an f14 as an example because I have a few of those in different scales. What scale are the Corgi planes that come in boxes with holes on the top for pegs?

I checked that website out. It's very nice. Does it have all of Corgi's planes archived there?

Popeye, take my advice - turn and run, don't walk, run away from this hobby while there's still time.
.....before you end up like....like......jim!... ....(oh the horror, the horror of it all)

Of course you are smart in starting off with Corgi, as that may just be enough to deter you from venturing any further down the road of ruin...(make sure you buy plenty of Mustangs)

Does Corgi do a lot of weathering to their models? I'm all about the weathering.

Corgi does both. Some with weathering some without.

Re: New collector with basic questions for starting this hobby

If you check out the thread that Cardinal referred you to you will get lot's of useful advice. My post on that thread emphasizes doing a decent amount of homework and eventually coming up with an initial plan---which can always be modified at a later date. I think it's a mistake to start, arbitrarily, with a single manufacturer like Corgi. If you follow this path it will lead you to sub par P-51s, F4Us,and Zeros, plus otherwise OK planes like the P-40 and JU-87 ( both missing pitot heads ) and superior entries such as the B-17, B-24, Mosquito, Lancaster, Hurricane, Swordfish, HE-111 and others. Following your homework, which should include a careful reading of many threads on this website concerning the planes you really care most about and a careful study of available pictures, I would buy the best planes in the scale you prefer, regardless of who makes them.
