Baffled by Corgi Warbirds

Okay, I understand that Corgi is trying to move into some lower priced segments, especially in the vacuum created by the demise of Matchbox. I understand the "Legends" series rationale of landing gear fixed in the "down" position. I understand the "Warbirds" rationale of landing gear fixed in the "up" position. What I don't understand is what an aircraft with landing gear up (and thus presumably in "flying" mode) is doing without a pilot. Even the Legends series had pilots! Are the Warbirds supposed to be hanging from the ceiling at a museum? Or sitting on a pedestal, guarding a gate somewhere?

That having been said, I really like my Spit IX. I just miss Flt Lt Smik at the controls...

Re: Baffled by Corgi Warbirds

The gear-up no-pilot is really baffling. If the things had pilots, I'd be more prone to collect them, just as a sideline (or just to fill in those orders that are borderline with shipping charges: "Gee, if I add just a few more bucks, I can get $4 off shipping!"). If they had gear and no pilot, ditto. But, I can't figure out what to do with a plane with no gear and no pilot (be nice!).

Re: Baffled by Corgi Warbirds

Since they are the cheaper versions you can carefully pop of the canopy and put a 1/72 pilot in there from a old model kit laying around.
Paint it up and then it would look a little better

Re: Baffled by Corgi Warbirds

I too dont understand the logic of corgi in this matter, are they trying to annoy us? I would have bought tons of warbirds if they had pilots and the reverse for legends.
As for adding a pilot inside the plane I am working on that but I cannot say I have found an easy and non time consuming way of dealing with that.

Let's not forget that some of the Fw 190's are also missing cannons.

Cool Re: Baffled by Corgi Warbirds

I agree in general though my view is if they can’t do a decent pilot and paint it well please leave it out. I really hate it when these companies blow a good-looking model w/ a ridiculously bad little lump in the cockpit. I am w/ Starman though; I would rather ad my own pilot. Besides I really do not think corgi is particularly marketing these to us anyhow. If they were targeting us they would add landing gear, but due to "breakage" concerns in the "toy" department marketing they are pursuing here. Corgi doesn’t seem to realize though that we are all crazy and will collect most anything w/ wings! Oh well, I buy the warbirds I like and stick to the Aviation Archive for the rest.
The figures in the Swordfish do look better than the usual Corgi efforts though. Hope springs eternal!

Re: Baffled by Corgi Warbirds

Face it guys, Corgi isn't marketing these things to the discerning collector. The fact that they can be found in the toy aisle at discount stores is mute testament to that. They're not trying to annoy us. They're just trying to sell large quantities of cheaply built toys to the undiscerning masses. I don't consider buying this line of Corgi any more than I ever consider purchasing a FoV or SpecCast.

I'm with Skunky on this one although I do have one FoV, their nightfighter Hurricane.

Thumbs up Re: Baffled by Corgi Warbirds

These are made for kids, and non collectors that did not know this quality exist in a plane at all. I am sure they were meant for Target and Walmart in general, have not seen them there yet, but that has to be the market.

I am sure that at the going price of $15.00 to $18.00 these are some of the best buys out there for anyone, Pilot or no Pilot, Gear or no Gear, I myself took one of the P-51 and gently pried out the gear cover and added Gear from a broken Corgi P-51 I had, Looks great and what a deal for the plane overall, I got it for $15.95.

You dont see to many nice P-51 Diecast 1/72 by anyone for $15.95.

What stores? If these are being made for kids where are they supposed to buy them? Besides online, where are people seeing Corgi Warbirds at?
