Re: Corgi AA32609 Grand Slam Lancaster

dilli - you'll have to post those pix guy !!!!!!!!!!! (even if it does start a new thread on the Armour section ! lol)

I LOVE Centurions, so I'd be very keen to see 'em.....as I'm sure would some of the other guys on the Forum.

Back to the subject......

It's amazing how differently coloured the actual 'Grand-Slam' in 1950 looks from it's Corgi counterpart (slung under the model !!!!!!!!)

One thing intrigues me........there can't have been that many 'Slams' made or produced.... & whilst the one in my Dad's picture was still on active charge with the RAF , I'd imagine it would have been de-commisioned during the next year/18 months ??????? (certainly as technology moved on & the RAF had a surplus of wartime munitions).

BTW, the photo's of the model are nice - makes a change to see "YZ*S" in someone's collection.

Sounds like the Grand Slams were kept in the inventory for awhile after the war. Wonder what all aircraft carried them. Centurions, yep keen on any pictures of them, great looking tank.

According to a post over at DAF the undercarriage on the Grand Slam Lanc should have been a scaled 1 foot taller, I guess they needed the extra height to get that baby under there

Here's that photo Hornchurch, not really worth starting a new thread as I realised the tank crews are obscuring that lovely Centurion....what were they thinking
My Dad is on the far left of the photo. 5th RTR, 7th Armoured Division, The Desert Rats. Stationed at Bergan-Belsen Germany

Re: Corgi AA32609 Grand Slam Lancaster

Well - I have also purchased this one from ebay three days ago; my thought was "less may be more". What I mean is, I knew that most of the turrets and the bomb doors had to be omitted on the B.I version due to weight reasons. So, less moving parts - less chances to have any flaws on the model. Paid 78 British bucks plus shipping.

According to the German wikipedia entry about the Grand Slam bomb, only 41 of them had been dropped. The manufaction process was said to have taken very long time since the torpex explosive had to chill down such long time after being filled in and thus the flying crews who had not dropped their bomb on their mission - for which reasons ever - were ordered to land with the bomb again!!

It was also said there that one of them served as a gate guard at Scampton airfield untitl 1958, when it was found out that no concrete was inside of the bomb, but still the original torpex!

"Resistance is futile."

Great video, JP. I've read about the Grand Slams, but never seen video of them before. Thanks for sharing them!

I guess lots of folk have not read The Dambusters by Paul Brickhill.
Tallboy & Grand Slam development and raids are all described.
