Re: Corgi Doolittle Raider B-25, Opinions?

PappyB,
The Corgi Doolittle "fake window" is accurate.

It's been written more eloquently elsewhere but the basic story is Doolittle navagator, not expecting to launch for another day, got plastered. Climbed on board, pointed vague East and siad "Tokyo is that-a-way," and went back for a nap. He had just received a care package from his wife and used the enclosed blue blanket to cover the window. Doolittle could barely wake him when it was time to bail out.

You yankin' my chain DJ? If not, that's pretty cool...

Re: Corgi Doolittle Raider B-25, Opinions?

PappyB,
Hey there sir.

The story has been told elsewhere on this forum and the old forum in far greater detail. Links were provided, which I probably have stored somewhere, but God only knows where that might be? (I've done some poking around today and I cannot find a link to the story, sorry.)

Nonetheless, it is a true story as far as I can tell. The flight was supposed to launch 250 miles and 1 day later than it actually did. (Or something to that effect?) There was a big party, much mayhem ensued. When the Hornet ran into the Japanese fishing fleet the decision was made to launch now instead of sailing along at 20 knots for another day or two.

When Corgi's diecast first came out there were howls of disgust over the blue window. Why blue? Why a window at all, etc. Someone came along with the story that backed up Corgi.

I'll be the first one to bash Corgi when they get sloppy, but I'd like to think I'll be the first to defend them when they get it right.

Anything for a weird life.

That is awesome, thanks DJ... definitely going to pick this one up now (hit the pooch up for a commission :-))

PappyB,
Hey there sir.

I think you will really like the bird. It is, in my opinion, one of Corgi's better moulds and the Doolittle is my favorite B-25 livery.

Yeah I agree the B-25 mold is stellar -- I have the RAF and Flight Line B-25s and love 'em... I was concerned about inaccuracies with the Doolittle as I thought I recalled a bunch of chatter on MH I about 'em, I'm happy to be informed by y'all that it's a good representation...

I think someone should ask Richard Cole about that story of the blue window..
Corgi's Doolittle bomber is one of my favorites as well.

....errr.....ummmm...remember now, Dick Cole ain't quite as young as he used to be and time has a funny way of tinkerin' with one's memory...probably best to leave this one alone and not tax the old gentleman's faculties ....I'm certain Corgi did their research well...........

Skunky, you should know better about that story since you made a very elaborate research and told us that story in the old model hangar.

Re: Corgi Doolittle Raider B-25, Opinions?

As I recall, that story came from a publication with a title something along the lines of "Tall Tales for the Gullible", edited by Skunkmeister, (in cahoots with Canuckle if i remember rightly) !
