Cool Re: Just received a Swordfish on floats.

I really liked the floatplane when it was first released and immediately bought one. Still one of my favorites.

Re: Just received a Swordfish on floats.

Good choice CC and plenty of schemes for that one. (maybe an early scheme, pre war).

To get back on track, I wonder if Corgi plan to release any more Swordfish models.

I hope so, only have a couple and plan on adding some more. Just curious if the AA36306 WWII - Night Missions Fairey Swordfish Mk.I is in the markings of one of the Swordfish that took part in the Battle of Taranto? Have to do a little digging and see if it is, because I would like a Swordfish with livery of the that battle. I would not mind having one in paint scheme for Swordfish used in the defence of Singapore.

Re: Just received a Swordfish on floats.

A few aeronatical contrivences that were fitted with floats:-Spitfire; Anson; Roc; C-47; Blenheim (Bolingbroke); Shark; Albacore; Swordfish;Norseman; Kingfisher; Ryan STM 22; Northrop N9P; Wildcat ; Grumman Duck; Helldiver; Curtiss Seahawk; Curtiss Seamew; Curtiss Seagull;Arado 95; Arado 196; Arado 199; BV ha139; Do22; He 60; He 114; He 115; Ju 52; Fiat CR 42;Almost any Japanese Navy fighter. So there are already a number of models produced which could be "booted" and create a unique series. An obvious omission from any manufacturer yet is the DeHC-6 Twin Otter which has served with many military aviation arms worldwide and also looks hansome when mounted on floats. Its a pity it had to be the short nosed version, but that was because the floats were intended to take first impact when drifting onto a river bank. The model would be a nice size, could have interchangeable noses , depending on the operator depicted, thus minimal expense to produce two versions. A third variation could come mounted on skis in some colorful military markings. The permutations are endless!

It would be nice to see some of these get made. A couple I would like to see are the Arado Ar 196 and the Blohm und Voss BV.138 (Neat looking three engine flying boat.).

If you don't mind really small float planes and flying boats:

Re: Just received a Swordfish on floats.

The Corgi Swordfish floatplane is one of my favorites, too. I got cheeky enough last autumn to fill up the kitchen sink and see if she would float.

Guess what - she didn't! I dried off her little floats and put her back on the shelf.

Not brave enough to try either of my Corgi PBY Catalinas.

Hey, at least it was probably clean and dust free afterwards.

Re: Just received a Swordfish on floats.

Found another Swordfish on floats that would make for a neat bit of history. It would be a Swordish off of the HMS Warspite during the Second Battle of Narvik (13 April 1940). During this battle the Warspites Swordfish sank a German destroyer and also the U-boat U-64. This may also have been the first U-boat sunk during WWII.

Not even close to the first loss. The first U-boat sunk was U-39 lost September 14, 1939 a full seven months before the Narvik battle. She was lost NW of Ireland after an unsuccessful attack on HMS Ark Royal. Three destroyers depth charged her, forcing her to the surface. All 44 crew members were able to abandon ship before she went down for good.

A total of 21 U-boats had been lost by the time U-64 was sunk.

Sorry, meant to say the first U-boat sunk by an aircraft.
